Semiconductor Revolution: First Mass Production of 7nm Process! Huawei Kirin Stabilized

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) has officially announced that it has begun mass production of the 7nm N7+ process. This marks TSMC’s first, and the industry’s first, mass production using EUV (Extreme Ultraviolet) lithography technology, which is of great significance and puts it ahead of Intel and Samsung by a significant margin.

TSMC stated that the yield rate of the 7nm+ EUV process has improved to the same level as the original 7nm process, which will significantly boost the production capacity of 7nm process chips this year.

TSMC expects that the total production capacity for 2019 will reach 12 million 300mm wafers, with 1 million wafers produced using the 7nm process, a 150% increase compared to last year.

According to previous reports, Huawei’s Kirin 985 will be the first to utilize TSMC’s 7nm+ EUV process, expected to be used in the Mate 30 series. Despite facing restrictions from the United States, TSMC has clearly stated that it will not stop supplying Huawei for the time being.

Additionally, Apple’s A13 has also been confirmed to use TSMC’s 7nm+, which will be crucial for this year’s new iPhone.

TSMC also revealed that it is steadily advancing the next-generation 5nm process, fully applying EUV technology, and has begun risk production, with mass production expected in the first quarter of 2020.

The new factory Fab 18, located in the Southern Taiwan Science Park, has begun equipment relocation and installation, and will directly launch 5nm production next year, while preparing for the future 3nm process.

Furthermore, TSMC has a transitional 6nm process, which is an improvement based on the 7nm process, expected to begin trial production in the first quarter of 2020, making it very suitable for existing 7nm process users to upgrade directly.
