My family’s Electrolux range hood ES01 has been in use for over ten years, installed together with a custom cabinet. Two years ago, its touch screen malfunctioned, and when I called the manufacturer’s customer service, they said the touch screen was broken and needed to be replaced along with the control box, costing 800 yuan. I found the price outrageous, so I abandoned the replacement plan and simply used a few wires to trigger the light, fan, and stop functions manually while cooking, which was quite troublesome. My wife was always worried about the risk of electric shock.
To solve the problem, I kept searching online for parts, hoping to find a suitable replacement. After six months of searching, I still couldn’t find the right parts. It is said that this model was released a long time ago, and there are not many left on the market, making it impossible to find parts anywhere.
Most of what I found online were complete control boxes for replacement, but the buttons did not match my range hood at all. If I forced the installation, it would look terrible. If I replaced the range hood, the dimensions would definitely differ from mine, making it incompatible with the cabinet and also unattractive. Moreover, I dislike the current flashy designs of range hoods, which often sacrifice smoke buffering space for aesthetics. I prefer the model I have, which includes a smoke buffering chamber, so I’ve been making do with it for over a year. See images 1 and 2.
Recently, I saw a custom membrane switch shop on an online platform and had a sudden idea to replace the touch screen switch with a custom membrane switch.
1. The first step was to understand the mechanism of the original touch screen switch. The control board’s chip is an MC68HC908JL8 microcontroller in a 28-pin package. There are seven wires coming from the touch screen; one is connected to the power ground, and the other six are connected to microcontroller pins 10, 11, 12, 15, 20, and 21, corresponding to I/O ports PTB7, PTB6, PTB5, PTB4, PTB1, and PTB0. This means that the microcontroller uses the B ports as keyboard input ports, with external pull-up resistors to raise the voltage level, while the touch switch triggers the corresponding program by pulling the voltage level low. See images 3, 4, and 5.
2. I clarified the layout of the original touch screen switch and its relationship with the control board’s terminal connections. By observing the wiring patterns on the glass panel, I drew a relationship diagram and verified that there were no errors.
3. I replicated the original touch screen graphics onto the membrane switch design.

4. I found a company in Hebei that processes membrane switches online, and I ordered five samples for 280 yuan. They arrived eight working days later. See image 8.
5. I removed the range hood’s control box, unplugged the original touch screen connector, and plugged in the new membrane switch connector, securing it with hot glue. I then peeled off the adhesive backing of the membrane switch and attached it to the original touch screen area, and tested it. All button functions were restored—perfect!

6. Finally, I secured the control board and replaced the range hood cover. See images 11, 12, and 13.
The repair was completed successfully; the appearance and functionality were perfect. All this effort was made because it is my own appliance, and I am used to it. I didn’t want to make significant changes, which is why I opted for this repair method.
