In the second half of last year, Qualcomm launched the upgraded Snapdragon 855 Plus, which was adopted by most high-end models released at that time.
However, as we approach the second half of this year, there are reports claiming that there will be no Snapdragon 865 Plus chip released this year. If this information is accurate, the next flagship chip to be updated will be the next generation Snapdragon 875.
Although the authenticity of this news cannot be confirmed at the moment, information regarding the next generation Qualcomm Snapdragon 875 chip has been gradually exposed.
Reports from XDA indicate that the brand new Qualcomm Snapdragon 875 may adopt a combination of Cortex X1 super core + Cortex A78 big core, likely continuing the “1+3+4” configuration.
It is said that compared to Cortex-A77, the Cortex X1 has a peak performance increase of 30%; compared to Cortex-A78, the Cortex X1 improves integer computation performance by 23% and offers twice the machine learning capability of Cortex-A78.
If the rumors are true, the brand new Qualcomm Snapdragon 875 should further enhance performance.
There are also reports that the codename for the Qualcomm Snapdragon 875 is SM8350, based on a 5nm process, integrating the new X60 5G modem.
As per tradition, Qualcomm is expected to launch the Snapdragon 875 later this year. Although this event might be delayed until early 2021 due to current circumstances, reports indicate that it has entered the final stages of development.
However, while updating the flagship chip, Qualcomm is also pushing for 5G to cover other product lines. There are leaks indicating that Qualcomm is about to launch its first 6 series 5G chip.
According to the consistent positioning of the Snapdragon 6 series, the new 6 series 5G chip should be positioned lower. This is expected to further reduce the pricing of 5G models.
In addition, a model called QUALCOMM Lito for arm64 recently appeared on the Geekbench website. It scored 3036 points in single-core and 7110 points in multi-core on the Geekbench 4.2.0 benchmark.
It is reported that the device participating in the benchmark belongs to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765 series and is a frequency-enhanced version.
In summary, although there are not many related reports at present, Qualcomm is continuously conducting research and development of 5G SoCs. As more and more 5G SoCs enter the market, the competition in the market is expected to become more intense.
