Today, Xiaolan will introduce the new generation TURTLEBOT 4 learning platform launched by ROS.
It is a mobile robot based on ROS2, built on the Create 3 developed in close collaboration with iRobot and Open Robotics, capable of mapping its surroundings, autonomous navigation, running AI models on its camera, etc., mainly used for education and research.
For beginners in robotics, it is a relatively affordable way to get started with ROS 2; for students who want to delve deeper into research, TurtleBot 4 also has research value that can extend your experience to a graduate level.
TurtleBot 4 is available in two versions: standard and lite:
Lite Version
Standard Version
Both versions are equipped with the iRobot Create3 mobile chassis, powerful Raspberry Pi 4, supporting ROS2, OAK-D spatial AI stereo camera, 2D laser radar, etc. All components are seamlessly integrated, providing a ready-to-use development and learning platform.
△ Hardware Comparison
In terms of integrated sensor construction, TurtleBot 4 is equipped with the RPLIDAR A1 laser radar sensor from SiLan Technology.
The RPLIDAR A1 uses laser triangulation technology, allowing for 360-degree laser ranging scanning within a 12-meter radius in a two-dimensional plane, generating planar point cloud map information of the space. This cloud map information can be used for mapping, robot localization and navigation, object/environment modeling, etc. Both TurtleBot 4 and TurtleBot 4 Lite use the RPLIDAR A1.
10Hz 8000 points VS 10Hz 4000 points VS 5Hz 2000 points
The RPLIDAR A1 is the first low-cost laser radar sensor launched by SiLan Technology, which has comprehensively improved the internal optics and algorithm system, increasing the sampling frequency of A1 to 8000 times per second, allowing the robot to map faster and more accurately. Whether from a cost or performance perspective, the RPLIDAR A1 is currently the first choice for education and research customers.
In fact, Xiaolan also wants to say that SiLan has launched multiple laser radars over the years of R&D upgrades, which have been well received by customers.
Currently, the total shipment of the TOF radar S series launched by SiLan has also reached an industry-leading level: the RPLIDAR S1 has a 40m ranging radius, can be used outdoors, has an independent closed cover, small size, etc., and can be mass-produced to ensure product reliability; the RPLIDAR S2 has an IP65 protection level, a 30-meter measurement radius, a 32000 sampling frequency, and a 0.12° angular resolution. The S2 performs more stably and reliably in detecting distant objects, switching between black and white objects, and objects under strong light. At the same time, its small size and excellent angular resolution allow for a wider range of applications.

From A1 to S2, to adapt to more application scenarios, the RPLIDAR series radar has been iterating and upgrading.
In the future, SiLan Technology will continue to deepen the research and application of laser radar, enhance overall service and operation capabilities, not only to continuously break through in technology but also to provide customers with a more comfortable and enjoyable product experience.
