Competition Topic Five:

Model design and analysis simulation evaluation of side-channel attacks/fault injection attacks in the pre-silicon development stage

Description and Requirements:

1. Choose any module: for example, the encryption algorithm unit module or the processor CPU unit module, can use self-implemented code or open-source code;

2. In-depth analysis of side-channel leakage (power consumption information leakage) at the RTL stage or the mechanism of fault injection (laser injection, voltage spike injection, etc.);

3. Establish a simulation evaluation process for side-channel or fault injection at the pre-silicon RTL stage, completing at least one type of side-channel attack simulation or fault injection simulation;

4. Theoretical analysis of the equivalence of the simulation evaluation process and the actual chip under conditions of side-channel or fault injection attacks;

5. Conduct simulation tests on an FPGA platform or EDA platform to verify the conclusions of the theoretical analysis;

6. Simulation testing platform tools: EDA platform or FPGA platform, cannot use actual side-channel collection or fault injection tools, software tools are not restricted.

Evaluation Scoring Points:

1. Ability to establish a complete pre-silicon side-channel attack or fault injection attack simulation evaluation process;

2. The clearer and more reasonable the discussion of the equivalence of the simulation evaluation method and the actual chip under side-channel or fault injection conditions, the higher the score;

3. Verification must be conducted on an actual simulation platform: for example, an FPGA platform or EDA platform.

The China Graduate Innovation “Chip” Competition is aimed at graduate students at home and abroad and fourth-year undergraduates who have obtained graduate school admission qualifications, competing in teams. The seventh competition in 2024 has preliminary self-nominated topics in integrated circuit design, semiconductor devices and processes, EDA algorithms and tool design in three major directions, and several enterprises have set up topic tracks and established additional corporate topic special awards. Participating teams can choose between self-nominated topics and corporate topics.

Preliminary Corporate Topic Track

Corporate topics are set by enterprises, requiring the completion of specific topic requirements. Teams that choose corporate topics will have their works reviewed by the enterprises.

Corporate topics will additionally establish special awards and prizes. The corporate topic special award is a preliminary round award; teams qualifying for the finals will continue to participate in the evaluation of awards in the finals, which does not conflict with preliminary round awards.

Final Competition System

The preliminary round of the Innovation Competition will be reviewed online or in meetings, with approximately 160 teams entering the finals based on a unified proportion of each track. The finals will be held offline in Wuhan. The finals include three stages: answering questions, defense, and performance.

Answering Questions Stage

This stage consists of basic questions and design on machine. Each member of the participating team must independently complete the basic questions, and their average score will be the basic question score for the team; the machine design questions are divided into categories of integrated circuit design, semiconductor devices and processes, optoelectronic chips and devices, and EDA algorithms and tool design, with specific questions set out in the finals notice. Participating teams can choose one direction and complete it collectively. The top 50 teams in this stage will advance to the defense stage, and other participating teams will not participate in the defense stage.

Defense Stage

All teams that advance will participate in the defense stage, where the content will be a live presentation of the works submitted in the preliminary stage, followed by answering judges’ questions. The top 15 teams will participate in the performance stage.

Performance Stage

Participating teams will perform in front of all teachers and students. The performance content will be the works submitted during the preliminary stage, with live answers to judges’ questions. Scores will be given by judges and on-site audience, with a weighted result of 80:20 to determine the final ranking. The top three will receive the honorary title of “Chip Star” in this competition.
