During the Grain Rain season, it’s the perfect time to start tea production.

On April 20, at the tea production season event in Nanjing’s Yaoshan Village, robots, robotic dogs, the sixth generation ‘5G+’ smart tea production line, liquid nitrogen preservation technology, and intelligent processing factories for Oolong tea… these cutting-edge technologies captured the attention of tea enthusiasts.

This event, centered around ‘Tea Technology’, showcased the intelligent innovations in the Anxi tea industry from the tea gardens to the workshops, and from production to health research.

Carrying a miniature tea basket and moving through the crowd, the appearance of this robotic dog, developed by a team from Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology, Anxi Tea School, and the county’s Artificial Intelligence Association, instantly became the focus of the event.

Project leader Ke Jianyang explained, “Currently, the first generation of the robotic dog has achieved material transportation in tea gardens, and in the future, it will have inspection capabilities, able to autonomously assess the growth status of tea trees and accurately implement water and fertilizer management.”

Also developed by the same team, the Beidou Intelligent Tea Harvesting Robot project held a signing ceremony that day. This project relies on Beidou’s high-precision positioning and AI algorithms to accurately identify the growth status of tea trees, aiming for millimeter-level precision in harvesting, thus solving the traditional tea garden’s reliance on human labor and low efficiency. The project leader revealed that the team plans to start field trials in the autumn tea season while simultaneously establishing a doctoral workstation to accelerate technology transfer.

In the tea production process, Baima Tea Industry launched the sixth generation ‘5G+’ smart tea production lineapplication. This system, which integrates Internet of Things technology, can achieve full-process digital control from the input of fresh leaves to withering and roasting, with real-time monitoring of parameters for each process, improving production efficiency by 20 times compared to traditional methods, with a good product rate exceeding 99.5%.

The intelligent processing factory for Oolong tea, developed by the Fujian Academy of Agricultural Sciences, is also filled with technological innovation. This intelligent processing deeply integrates IoT, automatic control, digital twin, and artificial intelligence technologies, systematically reconstructing the entire process of ‘intelligent’ processing of Oolong tea, achieving fully automated production with an annual capacity of 3000 tons, equivalent to ten times the scale of traditional workshops.

In the logistics segment, the liquid nitrogen tea preservation technology brought by Rishun Tea Industry has garnered much attention from tea enthusiasts. This technology uses advanced liquid nitrogen preservation equipment to rapidly lower the temperature of tea leaves, achieving quick preservation, and completing packaging and storage in a low-temperature environment. This technology has been successfully implemented, using scientific methods to lock in the ‘fresh and fragrant taste’ of Tieguanyin, solving the storage and preservation challenges of high-end tea.

From Beidou navigation in the tea gardens to digital twin in the workshops, from fully automated production to health benefits, every technological touchpoint at the event tells the story of the transformation of the Anxi tea industry.

As the ancient call of ‘shouting the mountain to start tea’ intertwines with the mechanical sounds of robots, the traditional tea hometown is using technology as a pen to sketch a new picture on the modern journey of ‘a single leaf’—here, there is not only the craftsmanship of tea-making passed down for thousands of years but also the intelligent engine driving towards the future.
