Step 1: Hardware Preparation and Connection
Materials Needed
Optical Modem: Usually provided by the ISP when installing broadband.
Wireless Router: Can be purchased online or from a computer store.
Network Cables: Two, can be purchased nearby at a computer store.
Computer: Used for configuring the router.
Connect the devices as follows:
Connect the fiber to the optical port of the modem;
Use a network cable to connect the LAN port of the modem to the WAN port of the router;
Use a network cable to connect the LAN port of the router to the network card of the computer (common routers have 4 LAN ports, choose any one);
Plug in the power supply for the modem and the router.
The connection method is shown in the figure below.
Turn on the power of the devices;
Start the computer.
Step 2: Router Configuration
Configure the computer’s IP, taking Windows 7 as an example.
Click the small computer icon in the lower right corner and select ‘Open Network and Sharing Center’;
Click ‘Change adapter settings’ on the left side;
Right-click ‘Local Area Connection’ and select ‘Properties’;
Double-click ‘Internet Protocol Version 4’ to open the IPv4 properties dialog;
Select ‘Obtain an IP address automatically’;
Click OK twice to close the dialog.
At this point, the IP address setting is complete.
Open the browser and enter ‘http://192.168.1.1’ in the address bar, then press Enter.
The router login interface will appear.
Note: Most routers currently have a default address of 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1; please refer to the manual for specifics.
