Goodbye Multilib: Arch Linux Simplifies Wine Operation Mechanism, Fully Embraces WoW64

The technology media linuxiac published a blog post on June 16, reporting that Arch Linux has announced the migration of the wine and wine-staging packages to a pure WoW64 build version, completely eliminating the dependency on the multilib repository.

WoW64 is a Windows subsystem that seamlessly supports 32-bit applications on 64-bit systems. Many Linux distributions previously required separate builds for 32-bit and 64-bit Wine packages, while the pure WoW64 solution only requires the installation of a single 64-bit version to accommodate both types of applications, significantly simplifying the maintenance process.

According to the blog post, although this adjustment aligns with the long-term development trend of upstream Wine, it may bring two issues in the short term:

  • OpenGL Performance Degradation: WoW64 has known performance losses for 32-bit applications that rely on OpenGL, which may be noticeably perceived by users of graphics-intensive software (such as games), but Vulkan and Direct3D applications are unaffected.

  • Prefix Reconstruction Requirement: Existing 32-bit Wine prefixes (i.e., virtual environments for installing Windows applications) need to be completely rebuilt. Users encountering compatibility issues should back up their data, delete the old prefix, and reinstall applications in the new WoW64 environment.
