With the rise of cross-border e-commerce platforms like Amazon and Tume, products must meet a series of strict standards to be listed for sale. Recently, the Tume platform requires carpet products to provide CPC/GCC certification, and lacking this certification may lead to removal from the platform. To obtain CPC/GCC certification, carpet products must pass the 16 CFR 1630 or 16 CFR 1631 carpet flammability tests. This article explains the 16 CFR 1630 & 16 CFR 1631 tests to ensure that merchants’ products meet the standards, satisfy consumer needs, and promote healthy industry development.

In the United States, carpets and mats used by adults and children over 12 years old must have a GCC (General Certificate of Conformity). The GCC certification for carpets is an important means to ensure that carpet products comply with U.S. consumer product safety regulations. This is a self-declaration certification, where manufacturers or importers guarantee that the products meet the relevant standards. As an important part of indoor decoration, the safety and quality of carpets are crucial, and GCC certification helps protect consumer rights.

For carpets on the Amazon Canada site, certain safety and compliance requirements must be met. The following guidelines can provide some assistance.

❗Must meet the following two regulations:
·16 CFR 1630:
Applies to carpets used in homes, offices, or hotels that are not adhered by mechanical means (such as nails) and have a one-way dimension greater than 1.83 meters and a surface area greater than 2.23 square meters.
·16 CFR 1631:
Applies to small carpets used in the same scenarios, with a one-way dimension not exceeding 1.83 meters and a surface area not exceeding 2.23 square meters.

⚠Additionally: Children’s carpets and small carpets: Like all products primarily designed or intended for children aged 12 or under, they must be tested by a third-party qualified assessment body recognized and accepted by the CPSC to determine compliance with other applicable children’s product safety rules. Based on this testing, domestic manufacturers (or importers) of children’s carpets must issue a Children’s Product Certificate (CPC) indicating that the product complies with these rules.
Other Common Testing Items
Wear Resistance Testing:Simulates daily foot traffic to assess the appearance and material performance after wear.
Color Fastness Testing:Includes wash and light fastness to ensure colors remain vibrant after washing.

Compliance Marking Requirements
Small carpets that do not meet the standards must be permanently labeled “FLAMMABLE (FAILS U.S. DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE STANDARD FF 2-70): SHOULD NOT BE USED NEAR SOURCES OF IGNITION.”
