Differences Between Plywood Guitars, Solid Wood Guitars, and All-Solid Guitars

Guitars can be roughly classified into three categories based on the materials used: plywood guitars, solid wood guitars, and all-solid guitars.

Plywood Guitar

Refers to guitars made with plywood for the top, back, and sides. The plywood used for making guitars is generally made by gluing together three layers of wood veneer. Plywood guitars lack tonal quality because the sound-producing parts are replaced by glue, resulting in a dull sound. Plywood guitars are easy to make as there is no need to consider the drying of materials. The typical method for making plywood guitars in factories is to first construct the body and then attach the finished neck using wooden pegs. This simple process can easily lead to neck deformation, causing the strings to be too high or the headstock to tilt back, resulting in fret buzz. However, they are inexpensive (the reference price is under 800 yuan). Personally, I believe that plywood guitars priced below 500 yuan can only be used as props or for children to play with. Learning guitar on such instruments will likely yield little progress. Even if one can practice well with such a guitar, it will require significantly more effort, usually resulting in a situation where the effort put in does not match the outcome. It is recommended that the cheapest plywood guitar should not be below 500 yuan, as the guitar is a musical instrument!

Solid Wood Guitar

Refers to guitars where the top is made from solid wood, but the back and sides are made from plywood. I believe that for a musical instrument, a solid wood guitar is the minimum requirement, as at least one piece of the top should be made from solid wood, which allows the solid wood to reach its maximum potential if made well. When choosing a solid wood guitar, one should also consider the materials used for the neck. Typically, African mahogany is the preferred choice, and the material of the fingerboard is also important; ebony is best, followed by rosewood. For finished guitars, the best way to choose is to have a guitar teacher play it to test the feel and compare the tonal quality. Depending on the materials used for the back and sides, the level of the top, and the fingerboard material, the market reference price is between 1000-3000 yuan. Guitars over this price might have exceptional appearance or be private label guitars made for foreign clients by domestic factories.

All-Solid Guitar

This is the highest grade of factory guitars and the most difficult to make because the entire guitar-making process must be completed in a controlled environment with regulated temperature and humidity. Both the top and back sides are made from solid wood, and the complex process requires the sides to be bent and shaped over a long period, resulting in high costs. Even in factories, the quantity produced is limited. Such guitars can showcase the original tonal characteristics of the wood, and among all guitars, all-solid wood guitars have the highest level of craftsmanship. Factories producing this type of guitar must be equipped with experienced testers and skilled workers to ensure quality. The price of imported all-solid factory guitars starts from 6000-10000 yuan or more.
