Cellular IoT Gateway Market Expected to Reach 8.6 Million Units Annually

Abstract: Market research firm Berg Insight predicts that from 2018 to 2023, the shipment of cellular IoT gateways will maintain a compound annual growth rate of 18.2%, reaching 8.6 million units by 2023.

Market research firm Berg Insight released a report on the cellular IoT gateway market in October 2018, stating that in 2017, the global market saw approximately 3.2 million shipments of cellular IoT gateways, routers, and modems, representing a 22% increase compared to 2016. The report forecasts that from 2018 to 2023, the shipment of cellular IoT gateways will maintain a compound annual growth rate of 18.2%, reaching 8.6 million units by 2023.

Berg Insights defines cellular IoT gateways as “independent devices used to connect M2M applications to nodes on cellular networks.”

According to the report, in terms of geography, North American suppliers dominate the local cellular IoT gateway, router, and modem market, with the largest suppliers being Cradlepoint, Sierra Wireless, Cisco, and Digi International. In the European market, Teltonika leads the cellular IoT gateway market.

The top five manufacturers in the North American and European markets generated approximately $375 million in IoT gateway sales revenue in 2017. Cradlepoint is the market leader with annual sales of $115 million, followed closely by Sierra Wireless with annual revenue of about $79 million.

Characteristics of the North American Cellular IoT Gateway Market

Globally, the North American market experienced the slowest growth in 2017. However, as mentioned below, this market is significantly different from others.

Moreover, despite the slower growth compared to other regions, Berg Insight expects that the North American cellular IoT gateway, router, and modem market will remain the highest revenue-generating regional market for the foreseeable future.

Forecast for Cellular IoT Gateway Shipments

It is clear that the North American market is dominated by large suppliers, but the situation is different in Europe and Asia. Berg Insight points out that in the North American market, the high certification thresholds set by operators have led to a monopoly by a few large suppliers, while the Asia-Pacific market has many small and medium-sized suppliers.

Berg Insight IoT analyst Fredrik Stålbrand stated: “Compared to the European and Asia-Pacific markets, the average selling price of IoT gateways in North America remains significantly higher, primarily due to the higher share of feature-rich 4G LTE devices in the product mix.”

According to Stålbrand, as customer demands for product integration increase, some suppliers are now beginning to develop products and services tailored for specific vertical markets, even launching complete solutions that include IoT gateways, peripheral hardware, and applications.

In addition to the five companies mentioned above, other major players in the cellular IoT gateway market include:

▪ North America: Other major players include CalAmp, Multitech Systems, Encore Networks, etc.

▪ Asia-Pacific: Major companies include InHand Networks, Maestro Wireless, Four-Faith, Robustel Technologies, and NetComm Wireless.

▪ Europe: Major companies include HMS Networks, Advantech B+B SmartWorx, NetModule, Matrix Electronic, Eurotech, Gemalto, Sagemcom Dr. Neuhaus, Option, and Beijer Electronics Group.

Berg Insight also notes that cellular IoT gateway suppliers are moving towards becoming system integrators in vertical fields; and according to market news, there have been few new product launches for LTE-M and NB-IoT devices; suppliers are also offering modular devices to provide flexibility and upgradability; finally, the pace of market mergers and acquisitions may accelerate.
