Alumni Connection | Zhang Yingjun: The Journey of Becoming an 'Invisible Champion' in the Gas Sensor Field

Zhang Yingjun is an alumnus of our college, graduating in 2006 with a Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science and Engineering. He is the founder and CEO of Shenzhen Shenchen Technology, leading a national high-tech enterprise. With 15 years of focus on the gas sensor field, he has led the company to achieve national high-tech enterprise status, provincial innovative small and medium-sized enterprise recognition, and municipal specialized and innovative certifications. Their products have entered the supply chains of 38 leading companies, including Xiaomi, Midea, Samsung, and Chery, with annual sales exceeding one million sensors, establishing a benchmark for domestic alternatives in this niche market.

My Entrepreneurial Journey and Transformation

In 2010, I graduated from the College of Materials at Shenzhen University and began working in the sensor field. In March 2012, I founded Shenchen Technology, embarking on my entrepreneurial journey. Over the past fifteen years, we have gone from being unaccepted in the domestic market to selling sensors in dozens of countries worldwide. How did I achieve this?

Focus on being small, deep, and fast, winning through profit (TOP 1/2/3 in niche markets). Niche = opportunity; profit is discovered, chosen, and designed.

Essence of Online Sharing

Online Sharing

At the alumni sharing session on May 8, Zhang Yingjun shared insights on “Exploring the Material Galaxy, Building the Gas Sensor Industry,” revealing the principles of hard technology entrepreneurship.

One

Product Strategy

Global Layout of the Golden Industry Chain

Precise Positioning

Focusing on niche fields and markets, deeply exploring customer needs, and refining products.

Patent Moat

Protecting key processes with trade secrets and applying for patents on peripheral technologies (multiple patents have been laid out to respond to the wave of domestic substitution).

Two

Market Strategy

Head Binding + Profit First

Three

Three Survival Rules

Customer Selection:Serving three industry leaders in niche markets to capture market share of top customers.

Pricing Strategy:Replacing imported sensors with domestic sensors, significantly helping customers reduce costs.

Overseas Path:Entering overseas markets through foreign agents (overseas gross margins are 15% higher than domestic).

Four

Dimensionality Reduction Attack for Material Entrepreneurs

Technical Transformation Advantage

From polymer material modification to humidity sensor development, the alumnus has established a closed loop from “laboratory – production line – market” in five years.

Industry Selection Logic

Avoiding the red ocean of consumer electronics, focusing on high-threshold fields such as industrial and automotive sectors.

Seizing the window period for “domestic substitution.”

Entrepreneurial Pitfall Guide

“The three major gaps in the industrialization of school technology: cost control, yield improvement, and customer certification.”

Zhang’s Golden Quotes

“The core competitiveness of sensor companies lies not in the laboratory, but in the pain points list of customers’ workshops.”

“Profit is selected – rejecting 80% of orders to excel in 20% of orders.”

Three Major Trend Judgments

Material Innovation:MEMS technology will replace traditional semiconductor sensors (Shenchen has already reserved related technologies).

Scenario Expansion:Smart cities drive the demand for air quality monitoring.

Cross-Industry Integration:The combination of electrochemical sensors and new energy solid-state electrodes.
