AI Empowers Education: DeepSeek Facilitates Instruction
Recently, a remarkable dark horse has emerged in the field of artificial intelligence, known as DeepSeek. Despite being in existence for just over a year, it has already made a significant impact on the AI landscape, causing considerable excitement. In Silicon Valley, it is perceived as “the enigmatic force from the East.” Particularly during the Spring Festival, DeepSeek garnered exceptional attention and influence on the international stage. On February 11th, the two-day Global Artificial Intelligence Action Summit came to a close in Paris, the capital of France. In his closing remarks, French President Macron stated, “We aspire for the entire planet to benefit from these innovations in a fair and open manner.”
What exactly is DeepSeek? What is its connection to our education and teaching? What revolutionary changes can it bring? On February 12th, Shanghai New Era Wuyi Bilingual School invited renowned artificial intelligence expert Xie Zuoru to give a special lecture on the development of cutting-edge technologies such as DeepSeek. This highly technological training opened the chapter for the new semester, laying the groundwork for promoting the application of artificial intelligence in our county’s education sector, enhancing teachers’ teaching innovation, and improving the quality of education.
In addition to our school’s teachers, all talented teachers from the compulsory education segment of Wuyi County also participated in this training.

Teacher Xie Zuoru, with the theme “From ChatGPT to DeepSeek,” delved into the challenges and applications of artificial intelligence in primary and secondary education. Starting from the development history of AI, he analyzed its transition from logical design to neural network learning, and pointed out the democratization trend of new-generation AI tools such as DeepSeek.
DeepSeek (深度求索) is an innovative technology company focused on developing advanced large language models and related technologies, established in July 2023. The reason for DeepSeek’s global buzz is its core product model, which has unique advantages: it is completely open-source, supports commercial use, and offers various functions and application scenarios, with multiple access methods such as AI dialogue, API interfaces, and model downloads, making it easy for users to quickly integrate and use.
DeepSeek’s open-source large model platform, with its efficient, low-cost, and high-performance technological advantages and rich functional characteristics, has rapidly achieved democratization, breaking the Western monopoly in the AI field.

Around this year’s Spring Festival, news about students using AI to help complete their winter vacation homework became a hot topic. After integrating with DeepSeek, students utilized this Q&A function for assistance. Some viewed it as a double-edged sword, while others considered it a step forward. Therefore, Teacher Xie emphasized the dual role of AI in education: as an empowering tool to enhance teaching efficiency and as a learning content to cultivate students’ technical literacy. At the same time, he proposed a layered framework for AI education, covering different stages from AI application to model training, providing a systematic implementation path for primary and secondary education.
Additionally, he discussed the application of AI in scientific discovery, such as AI4S, and how to promote the implementation of AI education through curriculum design and practical activities. Overall, this lecture provided educators with cutting-edge thoughts and practical guidance on AI education, characterized by high professionalism and inspiration.

Teacher Xie Zuoru gained an in-depth understanding of our school’s curriculum setup and provided positive suggestions for the current courses offered.
In China, some refer to the leading figures in primary and secondary STEAM education as “North Wu and South Xie.” “South Xie” refers to Teacher Xie Zuoru. From being an outsider to one of the first frontline teachers researching Scratch and Arduino courses in the country, he is revered as the “first person in maker education for primary and secondary schools.” He used numerous examples from his own research to guide our school’s teachers to find a breakthrough point in artificial intelligence for in-depth study and teaching, enabling students to gain knowledge and teachers to achieve success.
Teacher Xie believes that Wuyi Bilingual School has achieved considerable results in youth scientific innovation, with notable accomplishments. For instance, students have excelled in aerospace and astronomy competitions, appearing on the State Council’s website; they have won first and second prizes in provincial and national youth science and technology innovation competitions, achieving a breakthrough in this area for Wuyi County. He also hopes that the school can integrate more artificial intelligence in the future to assist in achieving iterative upgrades in youth scientific innovation.
Looking to the present, only by keeping pace with the times and actively embracing artificial intelligence technology can we continue to advance on the path of educational innovation. Wuyi Bilingual School will continue to focus on the deep integration of AI and education, committed to promoting innovative development in school education and providing teachers with a broader platform for learning and growth.
