“Constantly monitoring the arrival of night trains and activating the ‘smart dispatch’ system in real-time to call taxis to Hankou Railway Station for supply support.” On the afternoon of February 3, after receiving news of a night train arriving at Hankou Railway Station in the early hours of the next day, the Wuhan Municipal Transportation Bureau’s Spring Festival duty personnel issued new work requirements. This Spring Festival marks the first practical application of the smart terminal system for 16,000 taxis in Wuhan, and behind this, Zheng Longfei, the head of the Strategic Development Department of the Intelligent Transportation Center, and his team have become an indispensable force in this Spring Festival “big test”.Technology Empowerment, Revitalizing TaxisCurrently, there are over 17,000 taxis in Wuhan’s central urban area. As an important part of urban transportation, they often bear the responsibility of ensuring smooth transportation during peak holidays and adverse weather conditions. However, the onboard terminals of taxis in the past could no longer meet the demands of modern urban traffic management. To change this situation, the Wuhan Municipal Transportation Bureau actively promoted technological updates, revising technical standards starting in the second half of 2023, with formal implementation in 2024. New vehicles will integrate audio, video, and other data, while old vehicles will be encouraged to update their terminals early through incentive policies. By January 2025, 16,000 taxis had completed the terminal updates. The new system not only improves the authenticity and accuracy of data, providing taxi drivers with more convenient services, but more importantly, it acts like installing a pair of “heavenly eyes” on all taxis in the city, allowing for clear visibility of passenger and empty vehicle situations around supply points when the city urgently needs transportation support, enabling real-time remote command and dispatch of vehicles.Working Overtime, Updating 10,000 Vehicles in 45 DaysThe installation and debugging of the new system were not smooth sailing. The installation process required close cooperation between Zheng Longfei’s team and taxi drivers. Especially for updating old vehicles and systems, various issues were more likely to arise, such as data not uploading in real-time and video interruptions. To avoid affecting taxi drivers’ normal operations, the technical update work was usually scheduled during off-peak hours, which often coincided with Zheng Longfei and his colleagues’ rest time. However, as soon as a driver made a call, they never delayed, immediately going online and getting to work. Zheng Longfei introduced that in a month and a half, the technical team worked overtime, averaging over 200 vehicles per day to connect to the smart terminal system and debug, successfully updating 10,000 vehicles. During this process, 6 to 7 technical personnel took turns providing services to drivers, ensuring the smooth update of the system.Preparing for the Spring Festival Travel Rush, More Intelligent Capacity AllocationOn February 4, at 12:12 AM, the first “smart dispatch” instruction for taxis was issued: “Friendly reminder: Currently, there are many taxis waiting in the Hankou Railway Station area, please go to assist.” At 12:13 AM, 12:14 AM, 12:15 AM… the backend showed that surrounding taxis quickly responded after receiving the information, rushing to join the supply support. At 12:30 AM and 12:45 AM, as trains arrived in quick succession, supply support instructions were issued frequently, and more and more taxis responded to the call and rushed to the scene.Currently, the integration of the supply support taxi smart terminal system is still ongoing, reaching 16,000 units by the seventh day of the Lunar New Year. Through technology empowering the Spring Festival travel rush, the Wuhan transportation department has become more intelligent and efficient in assessing emergency capacity and quickly dispersing large passenger flows. At the same time, due to the convenience brought by technology, the passenger experience of “safety, convenience, and warmth” will also be greatly enhanced.A relevant person in charge of the Municipal Transportation Bureau stated that on February 3 and 4, as the return passenger flow increased, the taxi onboard smart terminal system issued a total of 17 supply dispatch information, mainly concentrated on the evening of the 3rd and the early morning of the 4th, issuing dispatch instructions to over 400 taxis, playing a positive role in dispersing the large passenger flow during the Spring Festival.Source: Wuhan Municipal Transportation Bureau
