World’s First! MIPI A-PHY + HSMT 12.8G Dual-Mode SerDes Unveiled

According to a report by Electronic Enthusiasts (Author: Liang Haobin), at the recent Qualcomm Automotive Technology and Collaboration Summit, Shouchuan Microelectronics launched the world’s first high-bandwidth 12.8Gbps PAM4 dual-mode SerDes compatible with both MIPI A-PHY and HSMT dual protocols, model VL7722X.

Shouchuan Microelectronics stated that this solution has been successfully validated on the second-generation Snapdragon Ride platform (SA8650P), demonstrating excellent compatibility and stability, fully meeting the demands of automotive electronic systems for high-speed, high-reliability data transmission. This includes the transmission of high-precision sensor data required for autonomous driving, smooth playback of high-definition video in smart cockpits, and real-time communication between vehicles and the external environment in connected car scenarios.

In April of this year, Shouchuan Microelectronics innovatively achieved the integration of MIPI A-PHY and HSMT dual protocol standards on the same chip, launching the VL7717S, VL7722S, and VL7724S series of dual-mode SerDes chips. In terms of video transmission rates, a single port can support various transmission bandwidths of 2Gbps, 3.2Gbps, 4Gbps, 6.4Gbps, and 8Gbps.

The advantage of adopting dual public protocol standards is that it provides greater chip selection space for OEMs, leading to higher compatibility across different solutions and improved development efficiency.

The newly launched VL7722X further increases the bandwidth to 12.8Gbps, providing a maximum transmission rate of 12.8Gb/s, which also means it can support the data transmission needs of higher pixel onboard cameras and high-line-count LiDAR sensors.

Currently, domestic SerDes manufacturers have achieved breakthroughs in bandwidth, with several companies launching automotive SerDes products of 12G or higher.

For example, Ruifake has introduced a 12.8G HSMT SerDes automotive chip with a single-channel forward transmission rate supporting from 2Gbps to a maximum of 12.8Gbps, and a reverse transmission rate of 100Mbps. It can support cameras with up to 15 million pixels and 4K @ 60Hz resolution displays. Additionally, Ruifake’s 12.8G HSMT SerDes has been adapted to various SoC platforms, including Horizon J5, Chipone X9H, Starry SAC8542, MTK MT8675, Qualcomm automotive SoC, Aixin Yuanzhi M76, and NVIDIA Orin.

Ruitai Micro displayed its automotive 12G SerDes chip set products for the first time at the 2023 Guangzhou Auto Show, where the M66S6x series serves as a single serial link channel serializer, and the M65Q6x is a four-channel deserializer.

This series of SerDes products is based on Ruitai Micro’s self-developed C3 Lync SerDes technology and IP, supporting 18 Mega@30fps camera image transmission. The forward channel supports rates of 12Gbps/6Gbps/3Gbps, with rates configurable via hardware pins and registers, while also supporting pin-to-pin compatibility for easy solution switching.

Renxin Technology will launch a 16G “R-linC” high-performance automotive SerDes chip at the 2024 Beijing Auto Show, supporting transmission rates from 1.6bps to 16Gbps. They have collaborated with Sony to introduce a smart driving 5V super-vision solution, consisting of one front ultra-high-definition camera based on Sony’s 17M image sensor (IMX735) and four super fisheye cameras based on Sony’s 8M pixels, along with five Renxin 16Gbps high-speed serial chips (RLC91603) and one highly integrated 6-in-1 deserializer chip (RLC99602).

It is reported that Shouchuan Microelectronics is also set to launch 16G SerDes products to establish a foundation for the higher data transmission needs of future smart vehicles.
