In addition to laptops, ASUS’s mini-computer product line has also welcomed the upgrade to the 13th Gen Core platform. The classic PN series returns to the battlefield under the name of Dawn X Mini, debuting at 5799 yuan, allowing you to purchase a mini-host with the 13th Gen Core i7-13700H. So, is this product worth our anticipation?
The Dawn X Mini is essentially the “chip upgrade version” of the earlier PN64, with no changes in appearance design, still featuring a sharp rectangular shape with large heat dissipation grids on both sides. The overall dimensions are 130mm × 120mm × 5.8mm, occupying about 0.9L of space.
This product comes with a VESA wall mount bracket, allowing it to be hidden behind the monitor, transforming it into an all-in-one computer, making the desktop space appear tidier.
The Dawn X Mini is the first to feature the 13th Gen Core i7-13700H model, which has 6 large and 8 small cores, 14 cores, and 20 threads. We can view it as the “official overclocked version” of the previous i7-12700H, with the maximum turbo frequency increasing from 4.7GHz to 5.0GHz, thus providing a certain performance boost, paired with a 120W power adapter, ensuring sufficient power supply.
This product will also later derive sub-models with the 13th Gen Core i5-13500H and the 12th Gen Core i3-1220P, but the i3 version’s power adapter is only 90W.
The Dawn X Mini is equipped with 16GB DDR5-4800 memory and a 512GB PCIe 4.0 SSD. Since the memory is not in dual-channel mode, it will result in a dramatic drop in integrated graphics performance. If you often play games, it is advisable to purchase an additional memory stick to upgrade to dual-channel as soon as possible.
The internal structure of this product is the same as the PN64, with 2 memory slots, 1 M.2, and 1 2.5-inch hard drive expansion slot. The wireless card comes in two supply batches: Intel AX211 and MediaTek MT7922, and the cooling module still employs an aluminum fin heat sink structure and dual copper pipe direct touch technology, with a fan that supports self-cleaning.
Regarding interfaces, its front panel is equipped with 1 USB-C 3.2Gen2 and 2 USB-A 3.2Gen2, all supporting 10Gbps transfer speeds. The rear panel also provides 1 full-function USB-C 3.2Gen2, USB-A 3.2Gen2, 2 HDMI2.0, DP1.4, and RJ45 Ethernet interfaces.
Compared to its competitors, Dawn X Mini emphasizes its powerful video output capabilities, with 2 HDMI, DP1.4, and the USB-C on the back capable of connecting up to 4 4K displays, supporting 8K resolution.
The ASUS PN series mini-host has always been the biggest challenger to Intel’s NUC. After upgrading to the 13th Gen Core platform, the performance of the Dawn X Mini has further improved, and its interface and expansion capabilities are noteworthy. Although DDR5 memory theoretically offers better performance, it also inadvertently raises the entry threshold. This product does not offer a barebones version, and the starting price for the low-end version with 16GB + 512GB is already 5799 yuan. If you include the monitor and upgrade to dual-channel yourself, the overall expenditure can already buy a gaming laptop like the Tianxuan 4.
At present, Jian Sheng actually recommends ASUS’s own PN53, which is equipped with the Ryzen 9 6900HX processor, with CPU performance comparable to i5, and graphics performance comparable to GeForce MX550. The price of 4999 yuan is also relatively affordable.
