Murata Manufacturing recently announced the coexistence of the Sigfox protocol stack and the LoRa protocol stack on its Type ABZ LoRaWAN module. With this feature, Murata has expanded its Type ABZ module to provide global capabilities for both LoRa and Sigfox on a single hardware platform. This module allows users to freely choose which network technology to adopt based on location, service requirements, and cost.
Both Sigfox and LoRaWAN offer low-power wide-area network capabilities for a range of IoT applications such as smart metering, device management, and asset tracking. Although there are some differences in their characteristics, their common goal is to pursue network coverage and higher service quality. By supporting both standards, this module can bridge the two networks, providing greater deployment flexibility.
As the first LPWAN module supplier to support both LoRa and Sigfox, Murata aims to gain a competitive edge in this field. For instance, when one network fails, customers’ applications can easily switch to the other protocol, providing redundancy in communication lines.
Murata’s Type ABZ LoRaWAN module is a compact low-power wide-area network wireless module that supports the LoRaWAN long-range wireless protocol. The module includes a Semtech SX1276 ultra-long-range spread spectrum transceiver and an STMicro STM32L0 series ARM Cortex M0+ 32-bit microcontroller, operating in the 806 and 930 MHz bands. STMicro is a core partner of Murata and is responsible for developing the Sigfox firmware. This multi-mode version is set to be released this summer, with availability in the fall. The module has already completed certification in Europe, while certification plans for the US and Asia-Pacific regions are expected to be completed by August.
“We are very pleased to collaborate with ST to bring the LoRa/Sigfox dual-mode module into the LPWAN ecosystem,” said Samir Hennaoui, product manager at Murata. “By integrating these two complementary technologies, our module will be applicable to a wider variety of applications, which is what our customers want to see.”
