Global Deployment Status of NB-IoT

Global NB-IoT Ecosystem Briefing

As of July 1, 2017, incomplete statistics show that 13 countries and 24 operators worldwide are deploying or planning to deploy NB-IoT.

It is worth mentioning that Deutsche Telekom launched the NB-IoT service package for the first time in Germany on June 26, divided into two types:

Global NB-IoT Ecosystem Briefing

  • NB-IoT Access, which is a package that only provides connectivity, starting at 199 euros, includes 25 SIM cards, each with 500KB, for a minimum of 6 months.

  • NB-IoT Access & Cloud of Things, which is a more comprehensive service package that connects to Deutsche Telekom’s IoT cloud platform for device management, data collection, and analysis, starting at 299 euros.

NB-IoT Chip and Module Manufacturers

Main NB-IoT Chip Manufacturers

Global NB-IoT Ecosystem Briefing

  • Huawei: Huawei stated that the NB-IoT chips (Boudica series) manufactured by TSMC will be shipped in large quantities in June, with commercial modules provided in collaboration with ublox and Quectel. The Boudica120 is expected to have a monthly shipment capacity of over one million units, and the Boudica150 chip is expected to ship in large quantities in Q4 2017.

  • Qualcomm: Qualcomm mainly adopts a dual-mode approach of NB-IoT + eMTC. At MWC 2017 Shanghai, China Unicom and Qualcomm jointly demonstrated a multi-mode IoT terminal that supports 15 LTE frequency bands at 900MHz and 1800MHz.

  • RDA: RDA’s NB-IoT chip RDA8909 supports dual-mode 2G and NB-IoT, compliant with the 3GPP R13 NB-IoT standard, and can be upgraded via software to support the latest 3GPP R14 standard. Another tri-mode product RDA8910, which supports eMTC, NB-IoT, and GPRS, is also in preparation and is expected to be mass-produced in Q2 2018.

  • ZTE Microelectronics: ZTE Microelectronics’ NB-IoT chip is Wisefone7100. It is said that Wisefone7100 integrates the CK802 chip from Zhongtian Microelectronics and will be launched in Q2 2017.

  • Intel: The chip model is XMM7115, which supports the NB-IoT standard. Samples are expected to be available in the second half of 2016. XMM7315, which supports both eMTC and NB-IoT standards, is expected to be commercialized in 2017.

  • Nordic: The nRF91 series is Nordic’s NB-IoT cellular technology product. Samples are expected to be available in the second half of 2017, with supply in 2018.

  • MediaTek: Recently launched MT2625, which supports 3GPP NB-IoT (R13 NB1, R14 NB2) operation across the full frequency range of 450MHz-2.1GHz, is expected to be commercially shipped in Q3 2017.

Module manufacturers mainly include Shanghai Quectel, Chiplink, and Guanghetong, etc. Due to the wide range of applications for NB-IoT, the concentration of NB-IoT module manufacturers is not as high as that of chip manufacturers, so they are not detailed here.
