Cost Comparison of LCD/OLED and Mini LED Backlit LCDs: iPad Pro and MacBook

Key Points:Apple has adopted Mini LED backlighting in its high-end IT products, including the iPad Pro and MacBook Pro models. At the same time, Apple is considering using OLED displays for its next generation of high-end IT models.

It is estimated that the manufacturing cost of OLED is significantly lower than that of Mini LED. However, as the display panel size increases, the cost gap is expected to narrow.

Apple is considering using OLED for the next generation of high-end IT display products

With the launch of the new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models, Mini LED backlit LCDs have finally been used in most of Apple’s high-end IT products. Mini LED backlit LCDs can perform HDR (High Dynamic Range) dynamic image operations, and their reliability is considered to be much better than that of OLED. Moreover, the manufacturing capacity of large-size OLED panels is not as sufficient as that of LCD panels.

However, many industry experts still believe that Apple may not abandon the development of IT OLED display panels and is still considering using OLED for its next generation of high-end IT models, as OLED has a significant advantage over Mini LED backlighting in terms of ultra-thin thickness. To enhance its brightness and reliability, an RGB tandem structure is currently being developed. To mass-produce large-size IT display panels, some OLED manufacturers are planning to invest in eighth-generation OLED factories.

Manufacturing costs of OLED are significantly lower compared to Mini LED

Manufacturing costs will be another advantage of OLED compared to Mini LED backlighting. Figure 1 shows the cost comparison between conventional (traditional) LCD, OLED, and Mini LED backlit LCD for the 12.9-inch iPad Pro tablet. The manufacturing cost of Mini LED backlit LCD is estimated to be significantly higher than that of conventional LCD and OLED – about three times that of LCD and twice that of OLED.

The cost gap for MacBook is narrowing
The manufacturing cost of the 16.2-inch MacBook display panel also has similar high costs. As shown in Figure 2, the manufacturing cost of the 16.2-inch Mini LED backlit LCD is estimated to be significantly higher than that of conventional LCD, about three times. However, the gap compared to an equivalent OLED panel is estimated to be only 1.2 times, which is much smaller than the gap for tablet display panels.

The manufacturing cost of OLED panels largely depends on their size. The area of the 16.2-inch panel is 50% larger than that of the 12.9-inch panel, resulting in a significant increase in manufacturing costs. However, this is not the case for Mini LED backlit LCDs. Module materials account for the largest portion of the total manufacturing cost of Mini LED backlit LCDs, but this does not scale proportionally with panel size.

At the same time, LED chips are a major component of module materials, and the total number of LED chips plays a key role in the cost estimation of Mini LED backlit LCD manufacturing. A 16.2-inch Mini LED backlight has 10,240 LED chips, which is almost the same as a 12.9-inch Mini LED backlight that has 10,384 chips. Therefore, the manufacturing cost difference between the 16.2-inch Mini LED backlit LCD and the 12.9-inch is not significant. Thus, the cost gap between OLED and Mini LED backlit LCD in MacBook will be smaller than that in iPad.
