The M2 Browning heavy machine gun began to be used by the U.S. military on the eve of World War II. After a series of upgrades, it is still in use by the U.S. military and other countries’ armed forces today.

Reportedly, the Ukrainian army is using AI robots equipped with M2 to attack Russian positions, installing machine guns, grenade launchers, and bombs onto the robots, aiming to leverage science and technology to reduce the risks of human combat. Currently, Ukrainian defense companies prefer to use the M2 heavy machine gun as the weapon for these robots.

The FRDM group, which manufactures drones and ground robots in Ukraine, uses .50 caliber firearms as the weaponry for the D-21-12 remote-controlled ground vehicle. This unmanned vehicle, used for combat and surveillance, weighs 1289 pounds (approximately 584 kg) including ammunition and can exceed speeds of 6 miles per hour (approximately 9.66 km/h), having received military approval for use in April. Ihor Kurakevych, product manager at FRDM, stated that the choice of the M2 heavy machine gun is due to its availability in many Western arsenals and the ease of obtaining its ammunition.

Ukrainian company DevDroid has also developed a new combat mode for its Droid TW 12.7 ground robot, enabling it to carry the M2 heavy machine gun for combat.
