Turn Your Smartphone Into A Universal Remote Control In Two Steps

Currently, it seems that only a few new models on the market, such as Samsung S4, Nubia Z7, Huawei Honor 3, and HTC One, have infrared remote control functions. What should we do if our smartphone lacks this feature? Don’t worry, below I’ll teach you how to DIY this infrared remote control function.

DIY Materials: 2 infrared diodes (you can take them from an old remote control if you don’t have any), and one 3.5mm headphone plug.

Welding Method: As shown in the figure below.

DIY Start: Reverse the two infrared diodes and solder them together.

Solder them to the left and right channels of the 3.5mm plug (it doesn’t matter whether you have a TRS or TRRS plug, just solder them to the left and right channels)!

I made two, but my colleagues took them away, so I have to solder another one for myself!

After soldering, take your phone, open the software, and plug in this little device. How do you verify if it works? You need another phone or a camera, switch to photo mode, point it at the infrared diode, and press the button on the software to test. If you see the infrared diode glowing on the screen of the other phone or camera, congratulations, you succeeded! If it doesn’t light up and your soldering is fine, then your phone does not support this feature!

First, try it out (in the office, I could only test it on the air conditioner; I had no chance to test it on TVs, set-top boxes, DSLRs, fans, etc. If anyone is interested, DIY one and come share whether these functions work).

I’ve tested three Samsung phones, and all worked; one HTC phone was okay; one Lenovo failed; Xiaomi failed, but Xiaomi 3 could be used, although the effect was not ideal, only effective within 2 meters. Xiaomi 1 failed because the phone does not support it, but a counterfeit Android phone worked successfully—counterfeit is also powerful!

All tests were done on my colleagues’ phones; each person’s phone model has different features, so I can’t guarantee 100% compatibility.

Here’s a screenshot of the software interface!

Using the office air conditioner for testing at a distance of 10 meters, temperature adjustment, power on/off settings all work.

Testing another air conditioner still works! Unfortunately, I have no other devices to test!

Soldering two infrared diodes yields the best results; my phone can control from 10 meters away. Soldering one infrared diode also works, but the remote control distance will be shorter!

Everyone can search for the software themselves (Android users can use the software “Remote Control Wizard”; iPhone users can use the software “ZazaRemote”), and the usage method can be explored on your own.

Finally, here’s the finished product!

With this, you no longer need so many remote controls at home; one phone is enough, and you won’t have to fight with family members over the remote control anymore!

Usage Notes:

1. First, set the phone’s volume to maximum (press the volume up button on the phone). iPhone users note: More —- Advanced Settings — ZAZA maximum volume must be set to 100%.

2. Device selection > Smart – ZaZa, other advanced options can be left as default (no settings needed for Apple).

3. Turn on the appliance you want to control.

4. Keep the phone facing the infrared receiver window of the appliance 1-2 meters away during matching. (Normal control distance is 3-5 meters; some phones may have narrower controllable angles due to lower headphone audio power, so they need to be aimed directly.)

5. When matching the remote control, select DIY library (if there is a response, release immediately, then test the signal. If it doesn’t match, it may have jumped to the next code, so select back to match again).
