MediaTek recently launched two new members of the Dimensity family – the Dimensity 930 and Dimensity 1050. Considering that the Dimensity 8000 has already been discounted to below 2000 yuan, and there are many Dimensity 1200 smartphones available around 1500 yuan, the main audience for these two chips will be the entry-level product line priced around 1000 yuan.
Dimensity 930
On the surface, the Dimensity 930 appears to be an upgraded version of the Dimensity 920, but in reality, it is not. This chip still uses TSMC’s 6nm EUV process, featuring 2 Cortex-A78 large cores and 6 Cortex-A55 small cores, but the main frequency of the large cores is only 2.4GHz, which is 100MHz lower than that of the Dimensity 920.
Additionally, the GPU integrated into the Dimensity 930 is no longer ARM’s proprietary design, but instead uses the IMG BXM-8-256 released by Imagination in 2020. The official information about this GPU is limited, only emphasizing its decent video encoding and decoding capabilities, with encoding supporting H.264 and H.265; decoding supporting H.264, H.265, VP9, MPEG-1/2/4. It is important to note that the maximum resolution supported by this GPU is only 2K@30fps, which is inferior to the Mali-G68’s 4K@30fps.
The other features of the Dimensity 930 remain largely unchanged, including support for full-band Sub-6GHz 5G networks, as well as 2CC dual carrier aggregation and FDD+TDD mixed duplex. The MiraVision mobile display technology can present vivid picture details, and the HyperEngine 3.0 Lite gaming engine integrates intelligent network management technology to reduce gaming network latency, providing a smooth gaming experience while extending smartphone battery life.
According to the official specifications, the Dimensity 930 only supports Wi-Fi 5, while other members of the Dimensity 900 family support Wi-Fi 6.
Dimensity 1050
The Dimensity 1050 can be seen as a derivative of the Dimensity 1100, also using TSMC’s 6nm EUV process, consisting of 2 large cores at 2.5GHz Cortex-A78 and 6 small cores at 2.0GHz Cortex-A55. The biggest change is that the GPU has been upgraded to the latest Mali-G610, but it only has 3 compute units, so whether the Mali-G610MC3 can outperform the Mali-G77MC9 is still uncertain.
Another feature of the Dimensity 1050 is its support for 5G millimeter-wave frequency bands, along with enhanced support for Wi-Fi 6E, improving network performance. The Dimensity 1050 also supports the MediaTek HyperEngine 5.0 gaming engine, LPDDR5 memory, and UFS 3.1 flash storage, providing faster application loading speeds and accelerating full-scene applications.
In summary, both the Dimensity 930 and Dimensity 1050 are entry-level 5G mobile platforms, with theoretical performance not matching Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 7 Gen1, and even falling short of MediaTek’s older platforms (Dimensity 920 and Dimensity 1200). They are suitable for smartphones priced around 1000 yuan, but if they appear in products priced over 2000 yuan, they will likely be met with disdain.
