The IoT Ecosystem and Platform Promote Each Other’s Development
IDC believes that the Internet of Things is a broad, diverse, and complex ecosystem, and the IoT platform is an important platform that connects various elements within the ecosystem. IoT platform vendors can aggregate partners within the ecosystem, form industry alliances, explore business models, collaborate and divide labor, and promote IoT solutions to be implemented in more application scenarios. These collaborations and attempts also promote the evolution and enhancement of IoT platforms, forming a complementary and virtuous development trend. For example, solution providers with deep industry experience understand the development and characteristics of their respective industries better than other partners. Based on this foundation, they can help IoT platform vendors improve their platforms by defining better digital models based on IoT products. An open IoT platform also promotes business model innovation among multiple parties, including application developers, platform suppliers, industry solution providers, and end users, leading to successful commercial outcomes in various industries and scenarios.
Platform Modularity Will Promote the Implementation of IoT Applications from Both Supply and Demand Sides
Different IoT user needs are not the same, and the decision-making process for IoT users is different from traditional IT decision-making processes. The deployment of IoT applications often arises from the needs of business departments within enterprises. These needs are for deploying IoT solutions targeting specific business scenarios to improve the operational efficiency of one or more aspects of the enterprise and reduce overall costs. Due to funding constraints, most IoT users find it difficult to design and implement a comprehensive IoT solution through top-level design. Therefore, IoT platform companies also need to provide diverse services or product strategies and develop different pricing strategies to serve IoT users, meeting the demand for steadily expanding IoT application scenarios while forming a solid cooperative relationship with client enterprises. Granting access to IoT platform functions in certain combinations is defined by IDC as a “modular IoT platform strategy.” Modular IoT platforms can also provide a more compact, convenient, and user-friendly development environment for IoT application developers. Thus, modular IoT platforms can better promote the development and implementation of IoT solutions from both user and developer perspectives.
IDC Research Manager Cui Kai from China Telecom and IoT Research Department stated: “In the next two years, more vendors and service providers will invest in and expand IoT platforms, leading to intense competition in the Chinese IoT platform sector. The push from vendors will accelerate the maturity and implementation of IoT technologies and solutions, and IoT platforms will play a significant role in this process.”
In addition, IDC China will conduct a special study on IoT platforms in 2018, selecting representative IoT platforms in China for in-depth evaluation, and releasing the China IoT Platform MarketScape report. We hope more platform vendors will actively participate. For more details, please contact IDC China Research Manager Cui Kai as follows:
