Recently, the Turkish Air Force successfully conducted the first test launch of the SOM-J stealth cruise missile using an F-16 Block 40 fighter jet, accurately hitting a moving maritime target, fully validating the missile’s precision strike capability against maritime targets. This test not only marks a new breakthrough in Turkey’s air-based long-range strike capability but also accumulates important data for the subsequent integration of this missile into the F-35 fleet. To accommodate the mounting and launch of the SOM-J, the test aircraft utilized an upgraded composite pylon and a new radar system, reflecting a system-level collaborative optimization.
The SOM-J missile is a scaled-down version developed based on Turkey’s domestically designed SOM cruise missile, tailored to fit the constraints of the F-35’s internal bay. The original SOM missile has been under development by Turkey since 2006, featuring a stealth-optimized design that includes a square body, diamond-shaped infrared window, rear-folding wings, and a belly air intake, providing excellent omnidirectional low detectability. To meet the F-35’s internal mounting requirements, the SOM-J underwent several key modifications: the missile body is slightly drooped, the air intake is arranged on both sides, and the wings are adjusted to fold downward. These changes significantly impacted its aerodynamic and structural design, effectively making it a new type of missile system.
In terms of performance parameters, the SOM-J has a total length of 3.9 meters, weighs 540 kilograms, and is equipped with a 140-kilogram-class warhead. Its propulsion system uses the French TRI40 turbojet engine, with a maximum range of 275 kilometers. Its guidance system integrates GPS/inertial navigation, a bidirectional data link, and infrared imaging terminal guidance, supporting post-launch re-targeting and dynamic flight path planning, achieving efficient destruction of moving targets. The overall technical level is comparable to that of international mainstream similar weapons such as the JSM missile, demonstrating that Turkey’s defense industry has reached a high level in the field of precision-guided weapons.
It is noteworthy that the SOM-J project has had a distinct international cooperation background from the very beginning. In 2015, Turkey’s Roketsan company signed a joint development agreement with the U.S. Lockheed Martin to jointly advance the missile’s development and integration. This means that the SOM-J has become the first non-U.S. weapon system in the F-35 aircraft system, which is of symbolic significance. More importantly, this missile is capable of being launched from both F-16 and F-35 platforms, suggesting that the U.S. may have provided Turkey with the underlying source code for the weapon interfaces of both types of aircraft, a level of authorization that even exceeds that granted to core allies like Israel, reflecting the special relationship between the U.S. and Turkey in defense technology cooperation.
From a strategic perspective, the successful test launch not only strengthens the Turkish Air Force’s maritime strike capability but also showcases the progress of its defense equipment system’s autonomy and system integration capabilities. The multi-platform compatibility of the SOM-J will significantly enhance the operational flexibility and mission adaptability of Turkey’s future air power. Meanwhile, the maturity of this missile also lays the foundation for entering the international defense market, particularly attracting the attention of countries seeking high-performance equipment with fewer political restrictions.
Overall, the successful test launch of the SOM-J is an important milestone in the development of Turkey’s defense industry, reflecting its rapid progress in high-end missile technology. At the same time, this project reveals the complex interaction between technology access and political trust in international military cooperation, providing a new perspective for understanding regional security architecture and the dynamics of arms proliferation.
