RISC-V International collaborates with the RISE Project to participate in the Yocto Project. RISC-V International has upgraded its membership from Silver to Platinum and will participate in governance at the board level, while the RISE Project will provide engineering support.
Embedded Linux engineers are very familiar with the Yocto Project. Established in 2010, the Yocto Project is an enterprise-level custom Linux distribution build system. Since then, it has become the de facto standard for building Linux-based embedded systems and has laid the foundation for other successful projects such as Automotive Grade Linux. Over the past few years, the Yocto Project has informally supported the RISC-V platform through community-maintained layers and contributions, but has yet to provide formal support.
This is not the first collaboration between RISC-V and RISE, but this partnership is particularly significant because the Yocto Project is a critical infrastructure project that impacts far beyond embedded systems. The Yocto Project maintains a large build and test matrix covering multiple platforms, which is essential for embedded systems. This means that many platform-specific tests can cover edge cases that might be missed, thereby enhancing the entire Linux ecosystem. Furthermore, formal support from the Yocto Project will enable RISC-V members to gain fully validated tool support when developing and marketing embedded platforms, allowing them to participate directly in upstream projects on par with other hardware architectures. All RISC-V profiles, including RVA23, will be supported, and the Yocto Project offers a 4-year Long-Term Support (LTS) cycle to help device manufacturers build and leverage platforms, providing critical features such as Software Bill of Materials (SBOM) generation and first-class build reproducibility.
This collaboration also aligns closely with the mission of the RISE Project. The RISE Project is a collaboration of over 20 companies that provide engineering and financial resources dedicated to the development and maintenance of the RISC-V software ecosystem. RISE has invested over 1 million euros in this ecosystem, becoming a driving force for software and tools at all levels, from foundational firmware to AI/ML applications, as well as integration with Linux and other operating systems. RISE is composed entirely of RISC-V members, and the two projects continue to collaborate.
Through collaboration with the Yocto Project, RISC-V International and RISE have opened a new path for RISC-V to continue leading the future of computing platforms.
