Japanese semiconductor giant Renesas Electronics has launched an MCU product for edge AI, enhancing AI performance by up to 30 times, and is manufactured by TSMC using a 22nm process.
Renesas announced the availability of the edge AI MCU product RA8P1, which has entered mass production, achieving inference processing performance over 30 times that of current products.

Renesas pointed out that the RA8P1 combines a 1GHz Arm Cortex-M85 and a 250MHz Cortex-M33 CPU core with the Arm Ethos-U55 NPU, achieving the industry’s highest level of 7,300 CoreMark CPU performance and 256 GOPS (Giga Operations Per Second) AI computing performance.
The RA8P1 is manufactured by TSMC using a 22nm ULL (Ultra-low Leakage) process, balancing high processing performance with low power consumption. This process supports the use of MRAM in MCUs, which offers faster write speeds and improved durability and data retention compared to Flash Memory.
On the 2nd, Renesas stock surged by 2.43%, closing at 1,815 yen; year-to-date, Renesas’ stock price has fallen by approximately 11%.
