According to Nikkei Asia, Japanese chip manufacturer Rapidus is in talks with Apple and other potential clients, planning to start mass production of advanced semiconductors in 2027.
Rapidus has partially launched its prototype chip production line at its Hokkaido factory this week, with full operations expected by the end of April. CEO Atsuyoshi Koike stated that the company will share performance data of these manufactured chips with potential clients by mid-July at the latest. Although Koike did not specifically mention Apple’s name, he confirmed that discussions are ongoing with major tech companies, including members of the GAFAM group: Google, Apple, Facebook, Amazon, and Microsoft, as well as AI chip design startups.
The company is negotiating with 40 to 50 potential clients but is currently reluctant to accept orders from Chinese manufacturers due to market complexities. Koike emphasized that the demand from American companies for alternative suppliers is increasing, driven by the tensions between the U.S. and China, as well as TSMC’s dominance in the advanced chip production sector, such as its exclusive position in manufacturing Nvidia’s AI chips.
Atsuyoshi Koike said, “American clients are aware of the tensions between the U.S. and China, and more and more are expressing the need for a second supplier.” Rapidus has signed memorandums of understanding with two startups, including U.S. AI chip design company Tenstorrent. To attract giants like Apple, the company knows it must prove its manufacturing capabilities. With IBM-licensed technology, Rapidus aims for 2nm chip production, a significant leap compared to the 40nm chips currently produced by Japanese companies. Mass production is scheduled to start in 2027.
Atsuyoshi Koike pointed out that some of Rapidus’s engineers have experience with Japan’s leading chip manufacturers and have a good grasp of 2nm technology. He acknowledged that TSMC plans to launch 2nm chips this year, but emphasized that Rapidus can accelerate its processes, claiming it can reduce the time from order to manufacturing and assembly by two to three times compared to competitors.
The company is also looking beyond 2nm chips. Atsuyoshi Koike emphasized that to maintain global competitiveness, development of 1.4nm technology needs to begin within two to three years after achieving 2nm mass production. Currently, Rapidus is focused on improving its prototypes and increasing yield, aiming to become a key player in the semiconductor race.
