If we were to identify Qualcomm’s biggest blunder in 2015, it would undoubtedly be the overheating Snapdragon 810 (high-end) and the mediocre Snapdragon 615 (mid-range) processors.
At the end of December 2015, Qualcomm released two mid-range processors, the Snapdragon 618 and 620. To better introduce these new products to the public, these chips were renamed Snapdragon 650 and 652, targeting devices priced between 1000 to 3000 yuan.

Does mid-range mean inferior to old flagships? Qualcomm proves otherwise with its performance.
Recently, the benchmarking platform AnTuTu published a comparison of the Snapdragon 650, Snapdragon 808, and MediaTek MT6795 on Weibo, showing that the Snapdragon 650 achieved a comprehensive score of 78,679, outperforming the other two in both CPU and GPU performance.

The MT6795 (Helio X10) was MediaTek’s flagship product last year, featured in major models like the HTC One M9+ and Meizu MX5; while the Snapdragon 808 was last year’s sub-flagship under the Snapdragon 810, dubbed the “non-heating 810,” and like the Snapdragon 650, it also features a six-core CPU, with representative models including the LG G4 and Motorola Moto X Style.

Although both the Snapdragon 650 and Snapdragon 808 are designed with six cores, the Snapdragon 650 employs the new Cortex-A72 architecture, which significantly outperforms the Snapdragon 808. Despite having a lower CPU clock speed than the Snapdragon 808, it delivers a more stable performance.

The Snapdragon 650 features a 2*Cortex-A72 + 4*Cortex-A53 CPU, with a maximum clock speed of 1.8GHz, and an Adreno 510 GPU, supporting dual-channel LPDDR3 memory, full network 4G dual SIM dual standby, and LTE Cat.7 download speeds.
The first device to launch with the Snapdragon 650 is confirmed to be the Redmi Note 3 full network version, priced at 999 yuan, while the first device with the Snapdragon 652, the Samsung Galaxy A9, has also been released, priced at 3199 yuan.
We must say, thanks to Qualcomm and Xiaomi, flagship configurations are now available in budget devices.
