If you have plants at home and go on a business trip or vacation, you might worry about who will take care of them. Without someone to water them, they may wither. Here, I share a set of automatic watering system kits that DIY enthusiasts can use as a reference.
A product from DFRobot’s store, the Arduino-based automatic watering kit “Free Life,” allows you to build a simple automatic watering system following their provided tutorial.
Main Components:
Free Life Automatic Watering System Controller
DHT11 Temperature and Humidity Sensor
Soil Moisture Sensor
Submersible Pump (Note: Must be used underwater, cannot be exposed to air!)
Rubber Water Pipe
Installation Steps:
1. First, connect the submersible pump’s connector to the controller’s Solenoid Valve terminals, blue to negative (-), brown to positive (+); then connect the power connector to the PWRIN terminals, black to negative (-), red to positive (+).
2. As shown above, install the control board onto the bottom plate of the white shell, then connect the soil moisture sensor to the control board interface.
3. Connect the DHT11 humidity sensor to the control board interface.
4. Use a Micro USB cable to upload the program to the controller. (Actually, the program is already pre-installed at the factory and can be used directly)
5. After completing the above operations, cover the white box.
7. Place a bucket of water near the plants, connect one end of the water pipe to the submersible pump, and the other end to “spray” onto the plants. Note that the submersible pump must be used underwater; using it in the air will damage it.
8. Connect the submersible pump and battery box (or power adapter) to the pump interface and power interface.
9. Once powered on, the controller will determine whether to pump water based on the signals returned from the soil moisture sensor.
Since different plants have different moisture requirements, users can adjust the humidity adjustment potentiometer on the controller to change the watering threshold to suit the moisture needs of different plants. As for the specific watering amount, users can modify it in the library files.
If you find the water flow from the supplied pipe too large, you can print a nozzle with a 3D printer to adjust it.
