Princeton University: Detailed Explanation of Memory Computing Embedded CPU [Download Included]

At the 2019 IEEE Hot Chips 31 conference held on August 20 this year, representatives from academia and industry detailed their cutting-edge and core technologies in the chip field and released some heavyweight chip products.In the field of computer storage, researchers from Princeton University have also provided a new direction, which is to let memory do the work of the CPU. One of the chip designers, Hong Yangjia, detailed the memory computing embedded CPU technology.
Researchers adopted a technology called Processing in Memory (PIM), which integrates the computing and storage functions of the chip, achieving a computation speed that is hundreds of times faster than traditional chips.
On one hand, its computing model makes it more suitable for applications in new computing paradigms such as deep learning; on the other hand, this technology also avoids the frequent memory access problem of von Neumann architecture processors to some extent, reducing data transfer times and lowering power consumption.
