On June 3, Micron Technology’s CEO Sanjay Mehrotra announced a series of products based on 176-layer NAND Flash and 1α (1-alpha) process DRAM at the COMPUTEX 2021 Virtual event held on June 2, showcasing Micron’s strength in innovation.
Micron stated that the first PCIe Gen4 SSD products (Micron 3400 and Micron 2450 SSD) utilizing the world’s first 176-layer NAND Flash have officially entered mass production, along with the world’s first LPDDR4x using the 1α process now shipping. These latest technologies and products further reinforce Micron’s strong leadership position in the DRAM and NAND Flash sectors for 2021.
The Micron 3400 and Micron 2450 SSDs feature excellent power efficiency, making them part of Intel’s Modern Standby Partner Portal Component List, and they meet the SSD testing requirements of Intel’s Project Athena Open Lab. Both SSDs have also received validation for AMD’s PCIe Power Speed Policy and Windows Modern Standby.
Compared to the previous 1z process LPDDR4x, the 1α process LPDDR4x offers a 40% increase in storage capacity and up to a 20% improvement in power consumption, making it ideal for mobile devices that require sustained power efficiency, especially in scenarios involving intensive memory usage such as photography or videography. Additionally, the 1α process enhances memory power efficiency, providing longer battery life, which is particularly convenient for laptops in today’s remote work and learning environments.
Regarding future trends in the storage market, Micron indicated that with the growth of five major application markets—5G, artificial intelligence (AI), cloud computing, automotive electronics, and the Internet of Things (IoT)—the demand for storage and computing is expected to surge, driving growth in the storage market. Therefore, they anticipate that DRAM will remain in short supply until 2022, and the supply-demand situation for NAND Flash will gradually improve.
Mehrotra cited 5G smartphones as an example, noting that global sales were approximately 250 million units last year, with research institutions estimating that this will double to 500 million units this year, with the DRAM and NAND Flash capacities in these devices growing rapidly. Furthermore, Micron is actively expanding into the automotive sector, with 128 GB and 256 GB capacity 96-layer NAND chips already being sampled.
Data shows that Micron is the third-largest DRAM manufacturer and the fifth-largest NAND Flash manufacturer globally, holding over 20% of the DRAM market share and more than 10% of the global NAND Flash market share.
In addition to Micron, another major DRAM manufacturer, Nanya Technology, is also optimistic about the market outlook. Nanya’s General Manager, Pei-Ying Lee, previously stated that in the second quarter, demand for consumer electronics such as networking products, TVs, and set-top boxes is strong, leading to tight supply. Additionally, the demand for laptops is robust, the server market is recovering, and smartphone demand remains steady, suggesting that the tight supply-demand situation for DRAM may continue until the end of this year.
ADATA is also optimistic, expecting strong demand in the second and third quarters across the PC, server, and smartphone markets, along with increased applications in automotive electronics, leading to a rise in contract prices for both DRAM and NAND Flash each quarter.
