As artificial intelligence rapidly integrates into industrial systems, computing platforms, and data center environments, the demand for advanced and efficient power management solutions is increasing. In response to this trend, Microchip Technology has launched the MCP16701, a highly integrated Power Management Integrated Circuit (PMIC) designed for engineers working with high-performance Microprocessors (MPUs) and Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs).
The MCP16701 integrates eight 1.5A buck converters that can be configured in parallel to meet higher current demands, along with four 300 mA internal Low Dropout Regulators (LDOs) and an onboard controller for driving external MOSFETs. This highly integrated design significantly simplifies the design process, reducing PCB area by up to 48% and component count by over 60% compared to traditional discrete solutions.
The MCP16701 comes in a compact 8 mm × 8 mm VQFN package, providing a flexible and space-saving power management platform, particularly suitable for applications with tight board space. Its functional settings are designed to support a wide range of power requirements and seamlessly interface with Microchip’s PIC64-GX MPU and PolarFire® FPGA.
The integrated I2C interface enhances communication between the PMIC and broader systems, making configuration and monitoring straightforward. The device operates reliably over a wide junction temperature range of -40°C to +105°C, ensuring performance under harsh environmental conditions.
A key highlight of the MCP16701 is its ability to dynamically adjust output voltage in fine steps of 12.5 mV or 25 mV. This provides designers with maximum flexibility to fine-tune power delivery according to specific application needs, optimizing overall system efficiency and performance.
The MCP16701 expands Microchip Technology’s growing PMIC product portfolio, joining established products like the MCP16502 and MCP16501. These solutions are designed to support high-performance MPU platforms across a wide range of use cases, including industrial computing, data centers, IoT infrastructure, and edge AI applications.
To accelerate development and evaluation, the MCP16701 is equipped with the EV23P28A evaluation board and an intuitive graphical user interface (GUI), enabling developers to quickly assess the PMIC’s performance under real-world conditions.
