Digital backend design utilizes EDA tools to achieve automatic layout and routing, completing the transformation from netlist to GDS. As the final step in the digital ASIC design process, digital backend design is the most critical component that determines the success of chip design. In recent years, the number of talents in digital backend design has not met market demand, and job salaries have been continuously increasing. Many companies have even relaxed their requirements for work experience in this position.

Although experience is not a strict requirement, companies that primarily seek profit will still not choose to hire an employee with zero foundation and zero experience. The recruitment conditions they offer often require a certain level of experience with EDA tools, relevant P&R experience, etc. Common interview questions for digital backend positions include:What does digital backend mainly do? Briefly describe the digital backend process. What makes a good PR? What is the purpose of CTS? What constitutes a qualified clock tree? Why does the clock tree need to be balanced? What are the drawbacks of an unbalanced clock tree…?Without relevant practical training, it is impossible to provide insightful answers that will impress the interviewer.

To help everyone quickly grasp the basic knowledge and operations required in digital backend design and lay a solid foundation for future work, E Course Network has launched the Learning PR Flow Based on ARM M3 Training Course. As is well known, digital backend involves the entire process from netlist to GDS, and layout and routing are very important parts of it.This course is based on ARM Cortex M3, 28nm process, and provides a complete introduction to the entire PR flow, along with detailed practical demonstrations. The main tool used in this course is Cadence’s Innovus. As an upgraded version of the first-generation backend design tool Encounter, it is currently one of the mainstream PR design tools in the industry, providing more reasonable and effective physical implementation solutions, demonstrating powerful functions in operational efficiency, timing analysis, and design optimization!

User Reviews

User 1: “It has a dbGet command, which is very powerful. Using this command well, compared to ICC and ICC2, I believe it makes the code very concise. The graphical interface is still not very user-friendly; for example, I want to see how a timing path in a timing report is displayed in the GUI, but I find that this function is not available.”
User 2: The GUI of Innovus is well done. For some beginners, they often prefer to learn and do projects through interface operations. In this regard, ICC2 is indeed not as good as Innovus. Many script commands cannot be found in the GUI, and even if some have corresponding interface operations, there are too many options, making it impossible to operate mindlessly.
User 3: The zooming view is the most frequently used operation in this PR tool. In this function, Innovus seems to be a bit more convenient than ICC2 because it supports right-clicking to select an area to zoom directly.
