According to a report by Electronic Enthusiasts (Author: Huang Jingjing), recently, SiFive Technology released its third-generation wireless development platform and new wireless SoC products based on it. Edge intelligence is creating new demands for wireless SoCs, and SiFive Technology has recognized this shift, upgrading in areas such as AI accelerators, memory, energy efficiency, and emerging standards.
New Demands for Next-Generation IoT Products
Dhiraj Sogani, Senior Director of Wireless Product Marketing at SiFive Technology, stated in an interview, “Our first, second, and third-generation wireless development platforms will continue to complement each other in the market. The second-generation wireless development platform is powerful and efficient, making it an ideal choice for various mainstream IoT applications, while the third-generation wireless development platform is specifically designed to help our customers create next-generation advanced IoT products with the necessary security, performance, and efficiency.New demands for next-generation IoT products primarily focus on artificial intelligence, energy efficiency, and more. Specifically, as more intelligence shifts from the cloud to the device side, the third-generation wireless development platform integrates AI/ML hardware accelerators. This increases processing power by over 100 times, enabling designers to consolidate all system processing capabilities into a single wireless system-on-chip (SoC) to meet the most complex edge applications. To meet the growing demand for complex protocols like Matter, products from the third-generation wireless development platform, such as SiXG301, offer large memory configurations—up to 4 MB of flash memory and 512 kB of RAM. This ensures that designs can accommodate future new features. For next-generation battery-powered products, the upcoming SiXG302 from the third-generation wireless development platform will adopt an advanced power architecture, using only 15 µA/MHz of operating current. This is achieved on the industry-leading energy efficiency foundation established by our second-generation wireless development platform products (such as the EFR32FG22 SoC), making it very suitable for existing ultra-low power applications like electronic shelf labels.
SiXG301
SiXG301 is the core product of SiFive Technology’s new third-generation wireless development platform, designed to address the increasingly complex, wired IoT devices. This product provides a highly integrated and powerful solution, especially suitable for advanced LED smart lighting and other smart home products. It is built on an advanced 22-nanometer process node, equipped with an ARM Cortex-M33 core and integrated AI/ML accelerators for high-performance edge computing. SiXG301 supports concurrent multi-protocol, capable of simultaneously running Zigbee, Bluetooth, and Matter over Thread networks. Additionally, it features dedicated SoCs that support multiple protocols (i.e., “M” type devices in the product code, such as SiMG301) and low-power Bluetooth (Bluetooth LE) (i.e., “B” type devices in the product code, such as SiBG301).To simplify design and reduce the bill of materials, this product also integrates specific application components, such as integrated LED drivers for smart lighting. It offers a very large on-chip storage configuration, providing up to 4 MB of flash memory and 512 kB of RAM. SiXG301 employs high-level Secure Vault™ technology to protect devices from threats.SiXG301 supports concurrent multi-protocol operation, allowing devices to communicate seamlessly across different ecosystems in homes or buildings, thus contributing to a better end-user experience. The ability to run multiple protocols simultaneously enables manufacturers to simplify their product lines into a single SKU, thereby reducing costs and saving valuable PCB space. Furthermore, the high integration level, including the AI/ML accelerator, eliminates the need for additional separate MCUs, further lowering system costs and size.
SiXG302
SiXG302 is designed to enhance battery-powered efficiency, utilizing SiFive Technology’s advanced power architecture, achieving ultra-low power consumption.” The upcoming SiXG302 SoC embodies our commitment to advancing energy efficiency in battery-powered devices. Our goal is to provide breakthrough energy efficiency without sacrificing performance, which we have achieved by combining new manufacturing processes with specialized power architectures.“Dhiraj Sogani said. Therefore, the operating current of this product is only 15 µA/MHz, which is 30% lower than comparable products. This performance level is achieved through two key technological advancements.SiXG302’s high energy efficiency is based on it being one of the first SoCs in our third-generation wireless development platform product line built using the advanced 22-nanometer process node. Utilizing this finer, more advanced process node is foundational for creating more powerful and energy-efficient devices for far-edge applications.SiXG302 is the first device to adopt our latest and most advanced power architecture. This architecture is specifically designed by SiFive Technology to minimize energy consumption, allowing SiXG302 to achieve industry-leading operating current metrics.By combining these technologies, SiXG302 will be an ideal solution for extending the battery life of wireless sensors and actuators, especially in Matter and Bluetooth applications that demand high endurance. Samples of SiXG302 are planned to be provided to customers in 2026.SiXG302 (battery-powered) SoC targets a broad market for battery-powered applications. Its breakthrough energy efficiency makes it an ideal choice for. battery-powered wireless sensors and actuators suitable for Matter and Bluetooth applications. These devices need to operate for years on a single battery, such as door/window sensors, smoke detectors, and environmental monitors.
Ecological Support
To ensure engineers can successfully adopt SiFive Technology’s new third-generation wireless development platform, SiFive provides comprehensive support covering software, hardware, and ecosystems.Dhiraj Sogani stated, “Our primary goal is to simplify the development process and protect our customers’ investments. The third-generation wireless development platform is built on a universal codebase that can be used across more than 30 SiFive devices. This enables efficient development and easy application porting. To ensure a smooth transition, the third-generation wireless development platform is designed to be backward compatible with the second-generation wireless development platform. This allows engineers to utilize their existing software and expertise. We provide the Simplicity SDK, an embedded software development platform for building IoT products based on the second and third-generation wireless development platforms. It integrates wireless protocol stacks, middleware, peripheral drivers, bootloaders, and application examples into a reliable framework for building power-optimized and secure IoT devices. We also provide hardware tools needed for engineers to get up to speed quickly and accelerate their development cycles. Like the second-generation wireless development platform, we offer a universal wireless starter kit with interchangeable RF circuit boards. Reference platforms: Engineers can access new reference platforms to simplify their development processes. These platforms frequently appear at our developer events. The third-generation wireless development platform is designed with scalability, providing developers with flexibility across different wireless protocols and applications. This makes it easier to connect to various gateway hubs and ecosystems.
The Third-Generation Platform Supports Development in China
The third-generation wireless development platform aims to assist our Chinese customers in entering the global market by providing a complete strategic solution. The third-generation wireless development platform enables our partners to create a top-tier product that is competitive in any region while simplifying the manufacturing and supply chain logistics required for global distribution. Ultimately, this will provide a scalable, future-proof foundation that protects our customers’ development investments, allowing them to establish a competitive advantage on the world stage. On October 23, SiFive Technology will hold the 2025 Works With Developer Conference in Shenzhen. This year, the Works With conference is a global series of events that will also take place in Austin and Bangalore, along with virtual meetings. Dhiraj Sogani stated, “We are excited to host an IoT developer conference specifically for the Chinese market. This event highlights our strong commitment to the Chinese market and is a key part of our strategy to provide local engineers with direct access to our experts and new reference platforms, helping them accelerate independent innovation.
