Fully perovskite tandem solar cells exhibit excellent performance and a wide range of applications. However, bridging the gap in power conversion efficiency between small-area and large-area (>1 cm2) devices remains a significant challenge, posing a substantial barrier to the commercialization of fully perovskite tandem solar cells. In light of this, on April 17, 2025, Ke Weijun from Wuhan University published research in Nature Nanotechnology on the use of piracetam to shape wide bandgap perovskite crystals for scalable perovskite tandems. This paper introduces a crystal modifier specifically for wide bandgap perovskites, piracetam, which can homogenize the top wide bandgap sub-cell and aid in constructing efficient large-area tandem solar cells. Piracetam contains amide and pyrrolidone groups, which can initially regulate the nucleation of perovskite, leading to the formation of large-sized grains, preferential (110) orientation, enhanced crystallinity, and uniform optoelectronic properties. During the subsequent annealing process, it further eliminates residual PbI2 and promotes the formation of one-dimensional (Pi)PbI3 (Pi=piracetam) perovskite nanoneedles at grain boundaries and surfaces. Consequently, the certified open-circuit voltage of the single-junction 1.77 eV bandgap solar cell is 1.36 V, with an efficiency of 20.35%. Additionally, the single-ended fully perovskite tandem solar cells, with aperture areas of 0.07 cm2 and 1.02 cm2, achieved efficiencies of 28.71% (stabilized at 28.55%, certified at 28.13%) and 28.20% (stabilized at 28.05%, certified at 27.30%), respectively, indicating a minimal PCE loss of 0.51% when transitioning from small-area to large-area devices. Furthermore, piracetam demonstrates broad applicability across different perovskite compositions, enhancing the efficiency of the single-junction 1.56 eV bandgap counterpart from 23.56% to 25.71%.
