To address issues such as the shortage of craftsmen and rising construction costs in Japan, LibWork, based in Yamaga City, Kumamoto Prefecture, has completed Japan’s first 3D printed house primarily made from soil. This single-story courtyard has a building area of approximately 100 square meters, featuring a bedroom, living room, study, and courtyard, with an external price of 60 million yen (approximately 2.92 million RMB), primarily targeting affluent high-end consumers.
On July 22, the company held an online press conference to publicly unveil the “LibEarth House modelB” (abbreviated as “ModelB”) for the first time to the media.Pre-sales will begin in August 2025, with order production starting in January 2026. The company president stated: “Typically, the characteristics of 3D printed houses are low cost and short construction time, but we hope to use 3D printing technology to create high-quality homes that allow for comfortable living.”
The walls made using soil as the primary material for 3D printing are inspired by Japan’s ancient earthen walls. The main material for the walls is soil from Awaji Island in Hyogo Prefecture. The walls constructed from this soil are waterproof and made with a special material that can withstand rain. Additionally, they possess seismic resistance to endure earthquakes in Kumamoto, while also providing soundproofing and thermal insulation properties required for residential buildings.
In addition, LibWork also plans to launch houses starting at 20 million yen. LibWork stated that if mass production and other goals can be achieved in the future, costs are expected to be halved.
