[Organization Introduction]

The Student Science and Technology Association of Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology, referred to as the University Science Association, is one of the seven student organizations under the Student Union, dedicated to the technological innovation work of college students, conducting academic, practical, and interesting scientific and cultural competitions. It is mainly responsible for the university’s academic technology works, entrepreneurial plan competitions, and related events at the university, provincial, and national levels, as well as organizing special activities such as the Science and Technology Cultural Festival, viewpoint forums, the “Fengyun Cup” popular science knowledge competition, meteorological day activities, and science and technology campus tours.

The University Science Association was established in 1997 and has gone through twenty years by 2017. Adhering to the motto “Gathering is a fire, scattering is a sky full of stars,” the University Science Association has continuously adjusted and improved its organizational structure with the efforts of each generation of association members. Now it has eight departments, namely: the Secretariat, Information Technology Center, Academic Science and Technology Department, Science Popularization Department, Entrepreneurship Practice Department, External Liaison Department, Public Relations and Volunteer Department, and News and Publicity Department.

University Science Association Organizational Structure:

The University Science Association focuses on conducting academic exchanges, enhancing students’ awareness of independent innovation, and pursuing excellence and contribution: In recent years, it has gradually achieved outstanding results in competitions such as the “Great Challenge” and “Youth Creation”; promoting and popularizing scientific and technological cultural knowledge, and invigorating the atmosphere of scientific and technological innovation; promoting scientific and technological cultural exchanges between universities, managing and organizing college associations and related club activities, coordinating and guiding their work. The members of the University Science Association have always adhered to the “four-wheel drive” of products, papers, patents, and projects, making their voices heard through products!

[Department Introduction]

Secretariat:

As the manager of the association, the Secretariat plays a coordinating and assisting role, serving as the link between the presidium and various departments, ensuring the smooth communication of notifications. It is responsible for managing archives, drafting documents, and keeping meeting records; during activities, it is responsible for the design and planning of preliminary schemes, coordinating the work of various departments, and supervising post-activity work; it is responsible for the overall financial reimbursement work of the association, being present from the beginning to the end of activities. It bears the important responsibility of ensuring the normal operation of the association and improving the work efficiency of the entire organization. In addition, the Secretariat regularly collects and manages various materials, compiles the “Chronicle of the Association,” records the association’s history, and contributes to its legacy. Welcome students to join us and compose a new chapter for the Secretariat together!

Information Technology Center:

The Information Technology Center is a multifunctional department with two sub-departments: the Information Group and the Technology Group.

The Technology Group is responsible for researching various software and hardware computer devices, including operating systems, and applying what they learn to serve the faculty and students. Their work includes reinstalling operating systems, upgrading and maintaining computer hardware (such as replacing laptop screens), helping teachers connect to the internet in their offices, and installing printers and routers. This is a paradise for technology and a place for the collision of ideas, where everyone can freely discuss technical issues in a relaxed atmosphere. Our motto is: There is no problem that cannot be solved, only people who are unwilling to solve problems! (Whether you are a cash-addict or a tech enthusiast, you can find your fun here.)

Academic Science and Technology Department:

As the main force of the Student Science Association in organizing student activities, the responsibilities of the Academic Department are mainly divided into two aspects: first, the regular activity group, which is mainly responsible for hosting departmental activities, conducting exchanges and cooperation between college associations, and organizing academic exchange activities, including mobilizing for various science and technology innovation competitions, collecting and organizing innovation information, and participating in the publicity and selection of “Great Challenge” and “Small Challenge”; second, the science and technology research and development group, which is mainly responsible for producing scientific and technological works, which can be used for the university and other universities’ science and technology cultural festivals, hosting science and technology exhibitions and various special activities, and assisting the association in hosting influential science and technology activities.

Academic Department adheres to the “four-wheel drive” of products, papers, patents, and projects, making their voices heard through products. In college, if you want to have your own patent, if you want to organize and participate in large-scale scientific and technological innovation activities, if you want to form your own research team and create products you like, the Academic Department of the Student Science Association will be your best choice. Regardless of your ability, as long as you dare to fight and work hard, you will have a stage that belongs to you!

Science Popularization Department:

The Science Popularization Department possesses a variety of skills and is responsible for various important science publicity and popularization activities of the association, including planning and hosting related activities during the Science and Technology Cultural Festival, organizing science popularization knowledge competitions among colleges within the university, planning and carrying out activities related to meteorological days, recruiting and managing science popularization volunteers in Jiangsu Province, and cooperating with other departments of the association to organize and plan large-scale activities.

Entrepreneurship Practice Department:

The Entrepreneurship Department emphasizes the combination of entrepreneurship theory and practice, aiming to cultivate innovative thinking and practical abilities, and organizing various practical activities – it has previously co-hosted a “Simulated Stock Trading Competition” with Nanjing universities, conducted visits to meteorological bases, and made a name for itself during the Science and Technology Cultural Festival with “Interesting Experiments,” contributing to initiatives such as the “Innovation Fund” and “Challenge Cup,” effectively encouraging all students to strengthen their entrepreneurial mindset. Additionally, the Entrepreneurship Department is responsible for organizing various entrepreneurship competitions, having co-hosted the “Entrepreneurship Nanjing•North Shore Action” – the 2016 Nanjing University Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, which had participation from over 10 universities in Nanjing and cooperation with 10 venture capital institutions, along with media collaborations including Nanjing TV and Yangtze Evening News.

External Liaison Department:

The External Liaison Department is the bridge between the Student Science Association and the outside world, serving as a window for the university to showcase its image and a link to other universities in Nanjing. As the diplomatic department of the Student Science Association, the External Liaison Department is a comprehensive department that emphasizes interpersonal relationships, communication skills, and overall image.

Regular college visits and exchange activities, ongoing sponsorship and investment, and timely reception of external representatives all showcase the rigorous spirit and excellent qualities of an external liaison person. Talented in many areas, able to perform on stage and cook in the kitchen, daily departmental meetings will overturn your previous views on fun. Dressed in formal attire, the ambassadors of the Student Science Association embody a solemn mission, giving meaning to every word, every gesture, and every action. Engaging in negotiations with sponsors, managing sponsorship funds, and participating in various provincial and municipal innovation and entrepreneurship and academic exchange discussions, organizing visits and exchanges, while actively participating, serving as the technological eye of the Student Science Association.

Public Relations and Volunteer Department:

We, the Public Relations Department, also known as the Public Relations and Volunteer Department, are one of the seven major departments under the Student Science Association. We are responsible for internal communication within the association, sometimes contacting various college associations for communication and exchange, and assisting various departments in organizing major activities. Riding hard, with science popularization as our purpose and dedication as our duty, we engage in selfless volunteer work. You will learn etiquette, host meetings, and articulate eloquently, showcasing your talents as we continue to serve the association for twenty years, striving to uphold the reputation of Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology.

News and Publicity Department:

The News and Publicity Department combines news and publicity, using words and colors, creativity and impressions, to leave the mark of the association in the hearts of every student of Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology. The News and Publicity Department carries the past, envisions the future, and shares every moment of the present. On platforms like QQ, Weibo, and WeChat, we promptly promote activities and disseminate scientific knowledge headlines to students and the public. The News and Publicity Department is present everywhere around you. Join us, and seniors will guide you to disperse the vast ocean of the association into streams that flow into everyone’s hearts!

[Activities of the Association]

1. Science and Technology Cultural Festival

The Science and Technology Cultural Festival for college students at Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology is a large event organized by the Student Union and hosted by the Student Science Association. The opening ceremony takes place between mid-April and mid-May each year, and the festival lasts for about a month. During the festival, the Student Science Association will hold a variety of activities, creating a new climax for scientific innovation and entrepreneurship on campus, and using this as an opportunity to hold an exchange meeting for science associations of various universities in Nanjing, sharing insights and experiences in organizational development, learning from each other, and complementing each other’s strengths. During this period, students can learn and master scientific knowledge and enhance their awareness of scientific innovation by making products and participating in scientific games. The Science and Technology Cultural Festival integrates science, art, and culture, coexisting science and entertainment, providing a unique “spiritual feast” for faculty and students with a series of colorful activities.

During the 2017 Science and Technology Cultural Festival, all departments hosted a series of activities with unprecedented participation and achievements, culminating in a grand closing ceremony that marked the perfect end to this year’s festival. The closing ceremony took place on May 21, which is also the 20th anniversary of the Student Science Association, with representatives from 11 university associations in Jiangsu Province and various college associations attending to congratulate the successful conclusion of the Science and Technology Cultural Festival and the 20th anniversary of the association.

2. “Youth Creation” National College Student Entrepreneurship Competition

In order to implement the series of important speeches by General Secretary Xi Jinping and the relevant instructions from the Central Committee, and to adapt to the needs of college students’ entrepreneurship development, the Communist Youth League Central Committee, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security, the China Association for Science and Technology, and the National Student Federation decided to jointly organize the “Youth Creation” National College Student Entrepreneurship Competition starting in 2014, held every two years.

Our association actively responds to and cooperates with the university’s innovation and entrepreneurship efforts, increasing publicity efforts and organizing internal selection competitions to further stimulate the passion and inspiration for innovation and entrepreneurship among our students, creating a vibrant atmosphere for innovation and entrepreneurship on campus. On May 29, 2016, the “Youth Creation” Jiangsu Province College Student Entrepreneurship Competition was successfully held at Nanjing Forestry University, where our university won two silver awards and five awards in Jiangsu Province, with two entries reaching the final defense and one entry qualifying for the national competition, ultimately winning a national silver award.

3. “Challenge Cup” National College Student Extracurricular Academic Science and Technology Works Competition

The “Challenge Cup” National College Student Extracurricular Academic Science and Technology Works Competition (hereinafter referred to as the “Challenge Cup Competition”) is a national competition co-hosted by the Communist Youth League Central Committee, the China Association for Science and Technology, the Ministry of Education, the National Student Federation, and local governments, initiated by renowned universities and news media across the country. Whenever the Challenge Cup approaches, the Student Science Association actively organizes our university’s selection competition, and as members of the association, we embark on our journey with the dream of the association.

In 2017, our association’s vice president Li Yingying performed excellently in the finals of the 15th Central South Valley Jiangsu Province College Student Extracurricular Academic Science and Technology Works Competition and the “Challenge Cup” National Competition Jiangsu Province Selection Competition, ultimately winning the provincial second prize. From the university competition to the provincial competition, the Student Science Association continues to move forward, constantly striving and surpassing itself.

4. Newcomer Meeting of the Student Science Association

It is usually held about a month after recruitment, organized by the Public Relations Department with cooperation from various departments. On the day of the event, each department showcases talents to enhance friendships among new members of the association, promote cohesion and unity between departments, and strengthen communication between new and old members of the association.

5. Viewpoint Forum

One of the unique activities of the association, mainly inviting academic experts and outstanding students from various fields to give talks, while also holding pre-heating lectures for various science and technology competitions such as the “Challenge Cup” and “Great Creation,” allowing face-to-face communication with industry leaders and receiving the transfer of innovation and entrepreneurship experience, feeling the collision of fresh ideas, and building an influential academic exchange platform for students in the university, establishing a great reputation among students involved in innovation and entrepreneurship.

6. Science Campus Tour

The theme of the Science Campus Tour is based on the characteristics of our university’s meteorological technology, conducting a series of activities in various primary and secondary schools, including science popularization classes, small scientific experiments, science knowledge competitions, and fun games. On one hand, it can stimulate and guide primary school students’ interest in science and technology, further popularizing scientific and meteorological knowledge among the new generation of primary and secondary school students; on the other hand, it allows the “little teachers” to enjoy the joy of sowing knowledge.

7. Heartfelt Association

“Heartfelt Association” is a special event launched on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the association, inviting submissions of articles and designs for commemorative items aimed at current and former members of the association. During this period, we also sent invitations to former members of the association from the 2013 to 2016 cohorts, sharing their stories with the association, their warm blessings, and their fond memories. They may have left the association or still be waiting for it, but at this moment, they share their hearts with the association, celebrating and taking pride in it. The “Heartfelt Association” paints a vibrant picture for the association’s 20th anniversary, leaving a precious memory for current and former members.

8. Intelligent Crawling Competition

The Intelligent Crawling Competition is a featured activity of the Science and Technology Cultural Festival and another large-scale university-level competition organized by the Academic Department. The intelligent crawlers use Arduino Uno R3 development boards as the main control chip, ultrasonic modules as distance detection sensors, and servos as the driving mechanism, utilizing the phase difference of the two servos to achieve the crawling direction. Each team creates their crawlers using materials provided by the association, with competition results determined by the crawling time of the intelligent crawlers, and there is also an award for the aesthetics of the crawlers. By creating this model, students can deepen their understanding of knowledge, stimulate their innovative spirit, develop practical skills, enhance teamwork and communication skills, and apply their knowledge in practice. Even students from unrelated majors can participate in some work and enjoy the fun of hands-on experience.

9. Innovative Projects for Earth Science Experimental Courses

To promote the construction of experimental courses in atmospheric science and environmental meteorology at our university, and to cultivate students’ spirit and practical abilities, the Meteorological Experimental Course Innovation Project was first launched in September 2015, based on the requirements of the National Atmospheric Science and Meteorological Information Virtual Simulation Experimental Teaching Center and the National Atmospheric Science and Environmental Meteorology Experimental Teaching Center, and the scope of the project was expanded in 2016 to include innovative projects for Earth science experimental courses.

10. Elite Talent Exchange Conference

The conference will invite seniors and teachers with experience and achievements in science and technology competitions and research to share their insights with all members of the association, aiming to inform everyone about the timing and relevant matters of various competitions to facilitate better choices and preparations for those wishing to participate.

11. “Fengyun Cup” Popular Science Knowledge Competition

Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology, as a national key university, has top meteorological programs in the country, and has held many exciting activities centered around the atmosphere. To further deepen the scientific and technological cultural atmosphere on campus and promote the comprehensive development of students’ quality education, the “Fengyun Cup” Popular Science Knowledge Competition is held.

12. Fuel Rocket Competition

The Fuel Rocket Competition is a large-scale university-level competition organized by the Academic Department, where departments prepare PVC pipes, ABS boards, cardboard, and rocket engines for participants. Staff will train the contestants, introducing the principles of solid rocket launches, internal structures, production processes, and launch procedures. After training, contestants will follow the steps to produce their works and make adjustments for test launches.
