Recently, a company in the Torch High-tech Zone
Xiamen Maida Intelligent Technology Co., Ltd.
announced
the successful production of
tungsten steel drill bits with a diameter of only 0.009mm (9 microns)
which can be applied in the fields of semiconductors,
medical devices (such as micro-hole processing for cardiac stents),
and other high-end manufacturing sectors

“Although the drill bit is small, it is the ‘tooth’ of industrial manufacturing.” Liu Guangda, chairman of Maida Intelligent, explained that high-end manufacturing such as semiconductors is like building skyscrapers on a “hair strand,” requiring extremely high precision for drill bits—not only must they drill accurately, but the error must also be controlled at the micron level.
For a long time,
0.01mm has been regarded as the “limit size” for domestic tungsten steel drill bits.
There are very few companies globally that can stably mass-produce smaller specifications.

is roughly one-tenth the diameter of a common hair strand.
From 0.01mm to 0.009mm
may seem like a mere 0.001mm leap,
but it is actually a technological “gap”
that must achieve collaborative breakthroughs in material formulation, processing technology,
and quality control.

“The R&D team innovatively adopted a ‘counterintuitive’ material ratio, enhancing toughness while increasing hardness.” Liu Guangda explained, “The smaller the size, the more pronounced the contradiction between hardness and toughness; too hard can lead to cracking, while too tough can cause deviation during drilling. After multiple formulation experiments, we finally found the best balance point.”
In the processing phase, the R&D team implemented micron-level breakthroughs, not only advancing the drill bit diameter to 0.009mm but also controlling the edge sharpness error within 0.3 microns, achieving performance indicators at the international advanced level.
Successful R&D is just the first step; high yield and stable mass production are key.To this end, Maida Intelligent has established a full-process monitoring system from materials to finished products, marking each drill bit with micron-level laser markings to achieve quality traceability throughout its lifecycle.
