On December 10, 2019, leading semiconductor component distributor in the Asia-Pacific region — WPG Holdings announced

that its subsidiary Pin Jia has launched a dual operating system solution for automotive instrumentation and entertainment based on NXP’s (NXP) iMX8QM.

With the continuous development of the automotive industry, new vehicles all have an information panel that integrates maps, entertainment, and other functions (the so-called in-vehicle entertainment system). Currently, digital dashboards and in-vehicle entertainment systems consist of two independent chip systems, one for the digital dashboard and the other for the in-vehicle entertainment system. This architecture not only complicates system development but also drives up costs.

The dual operating system solution for automotive instrumentation and entertainment based on NXP iMX8QM launched by WPG Pin Jia allows users to operate both the digital dashboard and in-vehicle entertainment system independently with just one iMX8QM chip paired with a set of “power system, storage device, and memory chip,” significantly reducing development costs. It is worth mentioning that the i.MX8QM chip adopts NXP’s latest technology and has passed ISO26262 and ASIL-B certification in the automotive market, thus ensuring a higher safety level for the chip in vehicle systems. The i.MX8QM chip contains a Cortex-M4F core, which provides not only a flexible and fast startup mechanism but also a display fault transfer function.
