DIY Solar-Powered Car: A STEM Technology Showcase

No fuel, no charging, just sunlight to run! Do you like such a car?

Is your understanding of solar energy still limited to water heaters?

In the context of an increasing energy crisis and global pollution, finding new energy sources to replace fossil fuels has become an important topic for scientists. Today, let’s watch the students from Hengshan Road Primary School showcase their low-carbon, environmentally friendly solar-powered car.

Hello everyone, my name is Wang Yuheng, I am 7 years old, and I come from Class 102 of Hengshan Road Primary School in the West Coast New Area. My hobbies include reading, assembling robots, and Peking opera. I am also a car enthusiast, and today I am bringing you this technological creation: a solar-powered remote-controlled car.

Principle of the Solar-Powered Remote-Controlled Car:

In 1839, a 19-year-old Frenchman, Becquerel, discovered during a physics experiment that when two metal electrodes in a conductive liquid were illuminated, the current would increase, leading to the discovery of the “photovoltaic effect.” In 1930, Lange first proposed using the “photovoltaic effect” to create “solar cells,” converting solar energy into electrical energy.

Solar energy is one of the cleanest energy sources in the world today. Compared to other clean energy sources, solar energy is not limited by location and is more convenient to use. Solar panels generate current and voltage when exposed to sufficient sunlight, charging the battery, which then provides power to the car.

The solar-powered remote-controlled car utilizes solar energy, using the principles of motors and gear engagement to drive the rear wheels, allowing the car to move forward or backward.

Assembly Steps:

Step 1: Assemble the car body, battery box, motor, circuit board, and solar panel.

Step 2: Assemble the remote control’s battery box, circuit board, and antenna.

Precautions:

1. The most complex part of making the solar remote-controlled car is the order of connecting the wires. When connecting the solar panel, onboard circuit, battery box, and motor, it is essential to follow the schematic strictly without any errors.

2. When using heat shrink tubing, ensure that all exposed wires are covered; otherwise, it may lead to electric leakage.

With the development of science and technology, solar technology is becoming increasingly popular, and costs are gradually decreasing. I believe that in the near future, we will all have access to true “new energy.”

Through the design and production of solar-powered smart cars, the students of Hengshan Road Primary School are learning about energy sources and utilization, establishing the correct concept of energy conservation and new energy development, and understanding the principles of solar energy conversion into electrical energy, thereby enhancing their scientific literacy. Approaching science and exploring the world, we are taking action! We are the successors of a technologically strong nation!
