On August 24, at the 7th Shanxi Cultural Industry Expo, a performance titled “Harmony of Ancient and Modern” was unfolding—a powerful drumbeat from the national intangible cultural heritage, the Yicheng Flower Drum, collided and intertwined with the mechanical rhythms of robots and robotic dogs from Yushu Technology, bringing the audience a cultural feast that transcended time and space.
In the center of the exhibition area, the Yicheng Flower Drum performance zone was already packed with spectators. Dressed in traditional costumes, the performers leaped and flipped, flexibly changing formations with the drumbeats, vividly interpreting the grandeur and agility of the Yicheng Flower Drum.
Just as the audience was captivated by the charm of tradition, the addition of two “technological figures” instantly elevated the atmosphere. The robotic dog from Yushu Technology marched in perfect unison, its limbs agilely adjusting their posture, resembling a well-trained “extra drummer,” accurately hitting every beat and resonating in sync with the drumbeats through its fluid body movements. The perfect match of traditional drumbeats and mechanical actions prompted the audience to raise their phones to capture the moment, with applause, cheers, and drum sounds intertwining to create the most moving melody of the event.
“So cool! The robotic dog performing with the flower drum is even better than a cartoon!” exclaimed Cheng Jiashuo, a child from Changzhi, holding up his phone and fixated on the stage. Taiyuan visitor Zhao Ruoxuan also tugged at her parent’s hand, continuously praising, “They dance well, and the robot plays well too; I want to see it again!”
“This is a fantastic collision of old and new cultures,” said Li Zixiong, Southern Regional Manager of Yushu Technology in Hangzhou, noting that combining cutting-edge information technology with the Shanxi characteristic Yicheng Flower Drum not only highlights the warmth of technology but also gives traditional culture a more trendy expression.
“In the past, intangible cultural heritage performances always revolved around the ‘old style’; this collaboration has shown me new possibilities,” said Xiao Jun, the inheritor of the Yicheng Flower Drum, with a tone full of joy.
This “resonance of drumbeats and code” not only aligns with the theme of the 7th Shanxi Cultural Expo of “Culture + Technology” but also allows the Yicheng Flower Drum, a pearl of intangible cultural heritage, to shine with contemporary brilliance under the empowerment of technology.
