Compact 36V, 4A Power Module Reduces Solution Size by 30%

Texas Instruments (TI) today launched the industry’s smallest 36V, 4A power module using Quad Flat No-lead (QFN) packaging.

The TPSM53604 DC/DC buck module’s 5mm x 5.5mm footprint enables engineers to reduce power size by 30%, while cutting power loss to 50% of other similar modules. The new power module features a thermal pad to optimize heat transfer, allowing engineers to simplify PCB installation and layout.

The TPSM53604 can operate at ambient temperatures up to 105°C, supporting robust applications in factory automation and control, grid infrastructure, test and measurement, industrial transportation, aerospace, and defense.

By pairing the TPSM53604 with compact buck modules (such as TPSM82813 and TPSM82810), engineers can create a complete power solution from 24-V input to the load point, while minimizing design time and effort.

Advantages and Features of TPSM53604

  • Simplified and Compact Power Solutions: Its single-sided layout with a total area of 85mm2 is a smaller solution for common 24V, 4A industrial applications. The standard QFN package helps simplify design, thus shortening time-to-market.

  • Effective Heat Dissipation in High-Temperature Environments: The TPSM53604’s QFN package area is in contact with the PCB for 42% of the area, enabling more efficient heat transfer compared to an alternative, such as ball grid array (BGA) packaging. Additionally, the module’s buck converter integrates MOSFETs and low drain-to-source resistance (RDS(on)), achieving conversion efficiency of up to 90% from 24 V to 5 V.

  • Easily Meet EMI Standards: The integrated high-frequency bypass capacitors and lack of bonding wires in the TPSM53604 help engineers meet electromagnetic interference (EMI) standards as stipulated by CISPR (International Special Committee on Radio Interference) Class 11 B.

Packaging and Availability

Available from TI and authorized distributors, the TPSM53604 QF package measures 5mm x 5.5mm, while the TPSM53602 (2A) and TPSM53603 (3A) modules are now in production and available from TI and authorized distributors.
