The Climate Exchange Center project in New York is jointly initiated by the City of New York and the Governors Island Trust. SOM and other design consultants are closely collaborating with the park’s partner, Stony Brook University, to create a “living laboratory” for sustainable development research, fully embodying the mission of the exchange center in the design of architecture, landscape, and infrastructure.The center is located on Governors Island in New York City, with a building area of approximately 37,161 square meters.
SOM’s design emphasizes sustainability, utilizing large-scale timber structures and on-site solar power generation as proactive energy strategies to achieve net-zero energy goals. The complex will operate entirely on power generated on-site and even has the capacity to supply excess power to the city grid.
The design of the building cleverly integrates the new structure into the natural landscape of Governors Island, forming an interactive “living laboratory.” The building’s exterior features a streamlined structure, with a roof equipped with wave-shaped solar panels that not only provide renewable energy but also allow visitors entering Governors Island from the Yankee Pier to easily identify the center.
Currently, Governors Island is only connected to Manhattan and Brooklyn by ferry, and the project planning emphasizes improving public transportation connections to ensure convenience for visitors and staff. Additionally, walking paths and bike lanes will be established on the campus to encourage green modes of transportation.
