Calcium Carbonate Grinding in Papermaking - Part 1

In China, the consumption of ground calcium carbonate (GCC) in papermaking has continued to grow for seven consecutive years. The development of papermaking GCC has shown new characteristics and trends, mainly reflected in the following aspects.Calcium Carbonate Grinding in Papermaking - Part 11. New papermaking GCCenterprises and market consumption continue to maintain a rapid growth trend. Currently, the total production capacity of wet-process GCC for papermaking in China exceeds 800,000 tons. Based on the actual consumption of GCC by 22 key domestic paper enterprises and the total paper production in the country,China’s GCC consumption is estimated to be 600,000 tons, a year-on-year increase of 46.3%. The rapid growth in consumption can be attributed to several reasons:① A number of small and medium-sized papermaking enterprises have begun to use local resources extensively to improve paper brightness and reduce production costs, replacing high-cost talc powder purchased from distant locations with high-brightness GCC ranging from 400 to 1250 mesh. In recent years, the growth in consumption of papermaking GCC and PCC has resulted in a decrease in talc consumption from 1.3 million tons to over 1 million tons.② Due to increased anti-dumping measures against imported coated paper, domestic production of coated paper and coated board has increased by 300,000 tons and 500,000 tons respectively, promoting the growth of GCC consumption.③ The reduction in prices of domestic wet-process GCC equipment has led to the expansion of satellite production lines not only in large papermaking enterprises but also in some small and medium enterprises that have begun to establish their own dedicated GCC production lines. It is predicted that GCC consumption will exceed 800,000 tons. Calcium Carbonate Grinding in Papermaking - Part 12. Joining the World Trade Organization has created conditions for foreign companies with economic andtechnical strength to enterChina’s non-mineral papermaking industry. According to the country’s new opening-up policies, foreign investment can not only build processing plants but also obtain exploration and mining rights directly. Due to the global economic downturn, the growth of papermaking calcium carbonate in developed countries has slowed, prompting some companies to shift their growth focus to Asia, targeting China’s potential papermaking market. Statistics show that at least 15 companies from 8 countries have entered the non-mineral processing field in papermaking. Some domestic enterprises are seeking to introduce foreign investment and technology to build high-level GCC production lines, creating a “calcium carbonate” boom. The main factory model for GCC is to seek cooperation with large papermaking groups to establish satellite production lines and strive to build high-quality GCC product bases relying on large mines. Several strong foreign companies operating in China have a production capacity of 600,000 tons/year, with an output of over 300,000 tons, which means that 50% of the domestic papermaking GCC market is controlled by foreign companies. This will further promote the improvement of domestic papermaking GCC production technology and product quality, while also intensifying competition among domestic calcium carbonate enterprises, which is reflected not only in the competition among existing domestic enterprises but also in the fierce competition between domestic enterprises and strong foreign companies, as well as among foreign companies themselves. From a macro perspective, the era of low investment and extensive enterprise construction is over. New enterprises have a higher starting point, not only requiring more advanced production technology and equipment but also more capital investment, as well as more scientific and improved managementand effective operational methods. The past simple method of lowering prices and increasing sales expenses is no longer suitable for modern market economic needs. Compared with large foreign companies, the biggest disadvantage of domestic non-mineral enterprises in market competition is their inability to provide users with the best usage technology and high-quality stable products in large quantities. The greatest risk for newly established GCC enterprises in the future is those production units that rely heavily on external factors. Satellite factories based on market demand will become the main factory model. A reasonable supply radius is also an important factor that new enterprises need to consider seriously. 3. New trading methods stabilize market prices

In recent years, the blind establishment of small and medium-sized enterprises in the papermaking GCC sector and disordered market competition have caused GCC prices to decline for five consecutive years, with a decrease of 35%-50% compared to previous years, and the price of D60 products in some regions has fallen to a marginal profit level. It is predicted that aside from dry powder products and D90 products, which still have some room for price reduction, prices will stabilize at current levels for a certain period. The traditional trading method involves both parties negotiating based on the price quoted by the seller. With the standardized development of the market economy, the new trading method allows buyers to approve the seller’s detailed cost accounting, referencing international and domestic market profit margins, thus granting producers reasonable profits. This new trading method reduces the possibility of producers making exorbitant profits, making market prices more reasonable and stable.
