Bluetooth™ Randomized RPA Feature Update Enhances Device Privacy and Energy Efficiency

Bluetooth Randomized Resolvable Private Address (Bluetooth® Randomized RPA) feature update has been released, which enhances the privacy and energy efficiency of low-energy Bluetooth devices by optimizing the management of resolvable private addresses. This article will discuss the importance of the Bluetooth Randomized RPA update, explain how it works, and provide practical information for users encountering this Bluetooth enhancement for the first time.

The runtime modifiability of randomized private addresses provides significant advantages in device privacy protection. They make tracking more difficult or hide the true identity of the device (e.g., public addresses or randomly static addresses).

Resolvable Private Address (RPA)

Low-energy Bluetooth supports resolvable private addresses.RPA is a type of randomized private address that can only be resolved by devices that possess the same identity resolving key (IRK). The IRK is a cryptographic key used to validate the address, which Bluetooth devices securely exchange during the pairing process.IRK.

RPA can protect device privacy in two ways: first, by making it difficult for external observers to associate device behavior through address patterns, thus preventing long-term tracking; second, by allowing only trusted devices to recognize each other.

Bluetooth Randomized Resolvable Private Address Update

Bluetooth Randomized RPA update allows the RPA timeout parameters to be set to random values within a specified time range, rather than the previous fixed value. Additionally, it enables the controller to randomly generate new RPA within a specified time range, thereby alleviating the burden of Host management and reconfiguration of RPA timeouts, avoiding unnecessary wake-ups and achieving energy savings.

The key enhancements to implement this new HCI command include:

  • Random time generation algorithm

  • Error handling

  • Backward compatibility

In the future, devices supporting Bluetooth Randomized RPA update will have new out-of-the-box behavior. They will automatically randomize RPA updates without explicitly calling the new HCI command.
