On July 31, it was reported that AMD is planning to develop a standalone NPU (Neural Processing Unit) aimed at PC users, bringing powerful AI capabilities to regular PCs.
According to reports, Rahul Tikoo, head of AMD’s client CPU business, is evaluating the market prospects for launching a dedicated AI engine similar to a standalone graphics card, while helping AMD to popularize AI.
The concept of a standalone NPU is not new; similar products have previously existed, such as Qualcomm’s Cloud AI 100 Ultra inference card, which has a goal similar to AMD’s current plan.
In recent years, dedicated AI engines on processors have been widely adopted, especially in AMD’s Strix Point and Intel’s Lunar Lake mobile processor series.
However, these solutions are currently focused mainly on devices like laptops, and there are no such options available for regular consumer PCs. AMD may take advantage of this market gap to launch a standalone NPU card.
Nonetheless, there may be doubts about the scale of the “standalone NPU” market, as not all consumers require high-end AI capabilities. If AMD targets the professional field, this could be a viable direction.
