Introduction

I have always been curious why Intel and AMD do not separate the NPU (Neural Processing Unit).

Combining it with the CPU in such a small space certainly compromises AI performance, which can only meet basic needs at best, which is quite a pity.

Detailed Introduction

Recently, there have been rumors in the market that AMD is considering launching a standalone NPU product, similar to the current standalone GPUs.

This means that in the future, if you need AI computing, there may be a new, cheaper option available.

Rumors Indicate AMD is Considering Launching a Standalone NPU Product to Meet AI Performance Needs for PCs

According to a report from foreign media CRN, senior executives from AMD’s PC business stated in an interview that they are discussing this “non-GPU product” with customers, which is likely an acceleration chip specifically designed for neural processing units (NPU), and mentioned, “We can achieve this goal very soon.”

This is a very new application area, so AMD is closely monitoring developments in this field.

However, AMD also stated that if companies want to enter this market, they already have relevant technological solutions and believe they can quickly penetrate the market.

With the launch of Intel’s Meteor Lake / Arrow Lake and AMD’s Strix Point series mobile processors, PCs have finally entered the AI PC era.

More and more users are beginning to experience the convenience brought by AI features, and major manufacturers are strengthening their AI engines to achieve higher TOPS performance.

However, so far, AI features have mainly been limited to mobile devices.

There were previous rumors that Intel’s next-generation Arrow Lake Refresh desktop processors would meet the requirements for Copilot+ PCs, but later other experts refuted this, stating that the NPU would not be upgraded, which dashed desktop users’ hopes.

Now, with AMD potentially launching a standalone NPU product, we hope not to encounter the same situation again.

When Will the Standalone NPU Product Be Released? What Will Be the Price?

AMD has not disclosed when this product will be launched, but from their statements, it seems possible at any time.

No price details have been revealed either, but it is speculated that it should be significantly cheaper than GPUs to maintain sufficient competitiveness.

If a standalone NPU product is indeed launched in the future, we hope it can work in conjunction with standalone GPUs and CPUs, which would certainly lead to a qualitative leap in AI computing performance, and this is something we are really looking forward to.

CRN’s report also mentioned that Christopher Cyr, CTO of Sterling Computers, pointed out, “If this NPU tile can achieve 50 TOPS (trillions of operations per second), just stacking two would provide 100 TOPS of computing power.”

However, Cyr also added that to replace GPUs, standalone NPUs must be more power-efficient than GPUs.

From recent products, it is clear that AMD’s consumer ecosystem is fully transitioning to AI, especially with the recent Strix Halo APU,

which can support up to 96 GB of unified memory and can allocate resources through driver VGM technology, enabling the capability to run large language models with 128B parameters.
