AI Empowering a New Leap in the Internet of Things: Insights from the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology

On August 16-17, 2025, the Internet of Things Conference was successfully held in Wuxi, Jiangsu. The conference was jointly hosted by the China Electronics Society and the China Communications Society. At the opening ceremony, leaders including Zhou Wendong, Vice Mayor of Wuxi, Zhang Feng, Secretary of the Party Committee of the China Electronics Society, Yin Hao, Conference Chairman and Researcher at the Academy of Military Sciences, and Song Tong, Vice Secretary-General of the China Communications Society, attended and delivered speeches. The conference gathered representatives from local governments, top industry experts, scholars, and corporate representatives from both domestic and international backgrounds. Nearly a thousand representatives attended on-site, with over 100,000 participating online.

The Chief Engineer of the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (hereinafter referred to as “CAICT”), Ao Li, was invited to attend and delivered a keynote speech. Ao Li pointed out that since its development in 2009, the concept, definition, and connotation of the Internet of Things have continuously evolved, with the emergence of new forms such as the Industrial Internet and mobile IoT, which are constantly expanding the boundaries of the broad Internet of Things. From a functional system perspective, a complete technical system can be constructed encompassing the edge, network, cloud, and security; from a development dimension, it is necessary to coordinate the three pillars of policy mechanisms, infrastructure, and integrated applications to support the continuous evolution of the IoT industry.

How can China accelerate the development of the IoT industry in the future? Ao Li suggested,

First, rethink the boundaries of the IoT concept, layout frontier directions, and accelerate technological breakthroughs, standard formulation, and ecosystem creation in areas such as edge intelligence and passive IoT;

Second, establish a system for measuring the scale of the IoT industry, select pilot cities, and clarify the foundation to target effectively;

Third, use the Industrial Internet and the digital transformation of manufacturing, smart cities and comprehensive urban digital transformation, intelligent driving, and smart health as breakthrough points to promote the large-scale development of IoT applications.

Strengthen the role of industry organizations, dispel enterprise doubts, and encourage increased application. Fully utilize the influence of industry organizations to actively guide the research and practice of industry application scenarios for industrial Internet identification, create “model rooms” for industrial Internet identification, and gradually replicate and build “commercial housing” for industry application of industrial Internet identification, forming a situation where “a spark can start a prairie fire”.
