A deadlock is a state in concurrent computing where two or more processes (or threads) cannot continue executing because they are waiting for each other to release resources. The main causes of deadlock are as follows:

  1. Mutual Exclusion Condition: Resources are exclusively allocated, meaning only one process (or thread) can use a resource at a time.

  2. Hold and Wait Condition: A process (or thread) holds certain resources while requesting additional resources.

  3. No Preemption Condition: Resources allocated to a process (or thread) cannot be forcibly reclaimed and can only be released voluntarily by the holder.

  4. Circular Wait Condition: A set of processes (or threads) exists where each process is waiting for a resource owned by the next process in the cycle.

When all four conditions are met simultaneously, deadlock may occur. When deadlock occurs, these processes (or threads) will be in an infinite waiting state, and the system cannot resolve this state on its own. To prevent and resolve deadlock issues, the following strategies can be adopted:

  1. Break the Mutual Exclusion Condition: Allow multiple processes to share certain resources, such as shared files.

23. What are the four necessary conditions for deadlock?

  1. Mutual Exclusion Condition: At least one resource is exclusively allocated to a process or thread, meaning only one process or thread can use it at a time. Other processes or threads must wait for that resource to be released.
