Recently,
A young man from Dezhou, Shandong, born in the 1990s, named Zhao
posted a video of a drone he made using chopsticks as the body,
which attracted the attention of netizens.
The drone costs only a few dozen yuan, and Zhao completed it in just 3 days
28-year-old Zhao is a technician in the power industry and has loved studying electronic products since childhood. In February of this year, while eating with disposable chopsticks, he had an idea: disposable chopsticks are cheap and sturdy, why not use them to replace the drone body?
In March, Zhao searched online for tutorials on making drones. After purchasing the parts, he managed to assemble a simple drone with a chopstick body in just 3 days.
How much did this drone cost? According to Zhao, the parts used include disposable chopsticks, an ESP32, an MPU6050 module, a gyroscope, hollow cup motors, propellers, and a lithium battery. The four propellers cost 3 yuan, the ESP32 is about 9 yuan, the gyroscope and hollow cup motor are both 8 yuan, the MPU6050 module is 10 yuan, and there are also lithium batteries taken from toys and a few cents worth of wires, totaling less than 50 yuan.

What principles allow the chopstick drone to fly? Zhao explained that the algorithm for controlling balance uses a gyroscope, while the power is provided by four hollow cup motors and propellers.
He plans to shoot a detailed tutorial, hoping everyone can get involved
On March 16, Zhao uploaded a video of the drone’s production and test flight online, which received an impressive 130,000 likes. In the comments, many netizens shared their materials and semi-finished products, stating “I am already making one,” and many others urged him to provide a more detailed tutorial.

Although this drone looks like a toy, Zhao claims it has all the main components found in commercially available drones, just without an outer shell, and it can achieve stable flight conditions; it can fly for 10 minutes, and increasing the battery capacity can extend the flight time; it can withstand wind levels of 5, and the current flight altitude is 70 meters. “It might be able to fly higher, but when I tested it at 70 meters, I could no longer see it, so I had to return it.”

During the production process, Zhao also encountered some difficulties. “The most challenging part was programming and debugging. I learned programming by following online tutorials step by step, and debugging took a whole day. To keep the weight consistent at all four corners of the body, I had to constantly adjust the weights to achieve stable takeoff.”
Zhao told reporters that he is currently filming a detailed production tutorial during his off-hours to share online. He hopes that everyone can afford to use drones and that children will put down their phones to experience the charm of technology through hands-on practice.
